Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

How to explain being laid off/fired in job interview

Good read for those trying to figure out how deal with the fact they were laid off or even fired during their next job interview. At least I found it interesting.

Just tell them you took a severance package as your job was being migrated and you didn't want to uproot your family to move for a new role. They will get it.

Oracle has laid off some 20,000 people over the last 2 yrs as it moves to the dialing for dollars, HUB, model and those laid off are experienced people like you

I agree with @UDa0aFJ-pas. Also, because of the major recession we had a decade ago, there should not be a stigma if you were laid off as part of a corporate restructure. I left before I got RIF'd but I indicated that "shifting business priorities with frequent restructuring" as one reason I wanted to leave Oracle after being there a long time (I was asked that question in a final interview). Depending on the ages of those interviewing you, if any of them are over 40 they probably have been RIF'd in the past themselves or know someone who has. In fact, one of the interviewers said "I understand...I worked at so I know what that is like".

I was actually told by the unemployment department, during a "how-to get hired" seminar, to never say you were fired. When you are asked why you no longer work at your last company, you simply state you left for better opportunities. If you got laid off, it was ok to say you got laid off. It is against the law for former employees to state the reason why you left, any work performance issues (positive or negative) and your pay rate. The only question they are allowed to answer is "if there was an opportunity to rehire the former employee, would you?

You don't need to say you were laid off/fired unless it was for a cause. Many companies would only confirm dates of employment and title if contacted for verification about their experience employees. You can just say you resigned for personal reasons or to find a better opportunity
