Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Layoff implications due to Dell going public by end of year

Dell's going public without IPO through backdoor VMWare tracking stock. This is planned to happen by end of the year. This is the macroeconomic stuff. But what do we hapless proletariat class of engineers need worry about now.

Going public means revaluation of cost and expenses. There's going to be a major pruning of headcount. New Product development will be canned. All other sustenance and support teams would be trimmed to bare sustenance levels. Expect all this to happen before October. Major tsunami of layoffs on the way. This site will be abuzz with activity. Get ready with your jumpsuits on to dive out of this mess.

Hey dude you said you have worked here 20 years and you don't know any such thing, then I would say you are one among those slacker or your stupidly ignorant. I know an a---xole manager who bribes his team members with gold/silver/platinum awards (if you know them) just before Tell-Dell survey to get good ratings and he does! When there is travel freeze in most part of the world he gets to travel with his team members to Hopkinton from India every year (members in rotation, 4/5 goes with him) and does barbecue party there inviting senior management folks to attend. Then he does some campaign for his promotion. He runs a 14 members team and they don't have enough work but he still get req opened up. Besides his team does not do any valuable work in the product food chain.

Another manager, his team gets entirely dismantled and jobs have shifted to another country. But he still remains a manager - managing what? Why there is waste of corporate resources? These are all in legacy EMC. If this business is not running by cronies and if it is not a syndicate what it is?

Good people live in peaceful place

Sh--ty people come because it's nice & valuable

Good people get tired of sh--ty people's behavior

Good people leave

Sh--ty people now a majority

Sh--ty people complain place was good, but now sh--ty

Don't realist they're the reason why

Is that what people here talking about?

I am in NDC also and just getting rested up for my next job. I could care less if I get laid off at this point, finding another job won't be hard. Easiest money I ever made.

If you don’t know what NDC is and how things work then why the fc you are commenting. We have no work and free paychecks for years and no we are not leaving and Yes it’s true that all talented people got laid off.

You worked for 20 years and have work life balance....Lol. Where do you work, planet Mars.

who the fc is interested in NDC projects - stop bragging about it ... if you do nothing , leave now - you feel you can do better , do it and do not check what the others do . Raise ideas and put them on open software community if nobody is listening , get your own startup running ... or just sit and complain since maye it's you that does nothing and keeps complaining how others are recognised and you aren't ?

I have no idea even what NDC so can't be important - and I been here 20 years now - still in software , still busy , still enjoying my work and life - never seen talented person being escorted out the doors .. not around here

Why complain when Dell is willing to pay for sitting around and doing nothing in NDC, this is happening for years and 5% annual layoffs doesn’t suffice. We figured out the system and all insiders are safe in every small layoffs. Move to Cyclone with no storage background and make fool of Hopkinton.

Let the free paycheck, huge bonuses and LTI’s continue as QA guy has bills to pay for 5 apartments he own in Nashua and he has to take directors and upper management for drinks. In the process he is safe from layoffs with no work and just play politics and oh ya SILVER AWARDS every year.

Just relax and collect the paycheck. Nothing wrong with sitting around and doing nothing in NDC. Cyclone is a joke anyways.

At NDC it’s Christmas everyday, no work for past 5 years. If you are insider like most who survive there, you job is gold. Enjoy free paycheck with no work. QA political guy will survive next layoff as he made a fool of upper management and he control’s them. QA II to principle and lead, so after moving to Cyclone what are you leading.

No work and silver awards, only in NDC. Enjoy buddy, but remember it’s bad for you and your family in the long run.

Issue is, Director and above wants to have Christmas every day at his home. He is least bothered how the lower management is running the show. As long as it is not his headache he is least concerned! Similarly, people above the director do that same sh--...! Dell is any way paying them to have Christmas every day. Who else would pay them for nothing...? So does not matter how the executing folks suffer.... Best way here to survive is, lick the boot of your boss, lie about your work and take paycheque every month as long as you wish.

Agree what the earlier person said .... "EMC an Evil Borg" and Dell runs on lame managers. But I wonder if that all is needed to make an organization successful? Would these people help revenue clock tick? Why is it that way? Why they never take measures to correct it? If you look at Thelayoff page, there are many companies whose employment situation is discussed - none of them is as bad as Dell/Dell EMC is. There is a tell dell survey to asses but does honest opinion comes in? I heard some manager uses awards(silver/gold/platinum) just before Tell Dell to bribe his direct reportees and extract good rating! What is Steve Price goal? What Michael Dell wants ?? Time has a way of revealing the truth though. Until the truth is out, it will be a syndicate run by incompetent mafias.

I think its laughable how those who are old Dell loyalist blame all this on EMC folks. Having worked for both I can tell you neither is perfect, far from it. EMC wasn't called the Evil Borg for nothing. IF your weren't from Boston or at least the East Coast you were treated like a red haired step child, the were highly aggressive, and political, wait that sounds a lot like Dell where the Austin mafia runs it all and folks have been for decades. Dell is like a poor school system that only hires its own graduates. Inbred and full of mediocre managers and staff. Both companies run on politics and a-- kissing . MD loves it, the blind lemmings that follow him , warm and comfy in their jobs willing to take the abuse year in year out.... I feel sorry for them.

If your boat has holes and you are sailing in high seas, you are bound to sink! That is what I see is coming for Dell unless he wipes out this menace. Not just politicking un-ethical practices seen at Dell-EMC are beyond description in a corporate world.

Not just Bangalore, it is an EMC wide problem. Dell should never have acquired EMC. It is bloated and highly political workforce, full of seasoned managers who are parasites, they have survived for decades on fat salaries just politicking. Any new product or group is quickly polluted by them, by sending one of their own to manage (damage) it. Earlier at least EMC used to make money, now even that advantage is lost.

Bangalore legacy EMC is a syndicate - it is not software/hardware/IT organization. In the name of employee loyalty, they are keeping a bunch of laggards. I doubt why someone does not bring it to the notice of Steve price or Michael Dell. By seeing how hard they are trying to save every penny and then on the other side self-serving managers in their offices. I feel pity for them. This menace has to stop for Dell to see his dream come through.

It impacted today in India Bangalore legacy EMC. Not sure how many positions...a few managers also included. But non performers still keep their jobs. Not sure where Dell want to head into.

"So why are we hiring now?"

The answer is because some of these roles that are being req'd now were approved some time ago and are needed for near-term objectives. Once the IPO happens, all bets are off and everything is reset to zero. The new requisitions may survive the fallout, but then again, maybe not. I've seen people hired into roles at other companies only to see the roles eliminated a few months later. At Dell, there are lots and lots and lots and lots of overlay roles and redundancies that WILL go away.

Oh, this is coming, folks. There's no way around it. Wall Street will demand a reduction in the debt since the IPO will not generate all of the capital required to reduce these liabilities. It's a financing fact. Sure, you will hear all of the platitudes of "this and that are great...we love our people...blah, blah, blah", but the reality is that there will be a culling. Get prepared now and start networking with everyone you know. Maybe your number won't be called, but if it is, you need to be ready.

MSD Is in desperation mode to get out from under the mountain of debt he brought on by buying out Dell and them EMC and trying to make them private. He supposedly despises Wall Street and was quoted as such in an article from 2014 "A year after spending $24.9 billion taking his computer company private, Michael S. Dell is gleeful to have his namesake firm to himself. And to be done with Wall Street.

“This morning on the treadmill I was watching Bloomberg and CNBC, all the circus clowns,” Mr. Dell said in a recent interview. His disdain for investment advice as entertainment is obvious — so obvious that no one should have been surprised that to get away from Wall Street’s influence, Mr. Dell endured a monthslong, often personal campaign for a higher shareholder buyout price by the corporate raider Carl C. Icahn." Full article is here https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/03/business/dells-life-after-wall-street.html .This shows that he is desperate to climb out fro

The debt he brought on. Once the company becomes public and they continue to post the losses like they have for the past 2 plus years it will be a fire sale of divisions and complete out sourcing of North American jobs overseas. Just do some simple google searches on Dells business model over the years, this is all the only way they do business and it will be fully accelerated once the company is public.
