========================

On Monday, Amazon and VMware introduced a version of Amazon's cloud-based database management software that's meant for companies that ""still use on-premises data centers""..

The announcement at VMware's VMworld conference in Las Vegas is the latest example of Amazon's shift in strategy to support corporate computing outside its own facilities, even as more business moves to the cloud, where AWS is the market leader. The move strengthens AWS' so-called hybrid-cloud offerings against rivals Microsoft, Google and IBM.

It is not VMware in VOS but Veritas. VOS stands for Veritas, Oracle and Sun.

Long ago in those prosperous couple of years before Y2K, the Oracle, Sun, and VMware stack was so popular that the three companies built a support center ("VOS") and called upon customers as a team. The call center was located somewhere East Bay, maybe Pleasonton, if I remember correctly. But you're right, Oracle usually rolled their own to give them complete control over database performance, including disk volume managers and virtualization layers.

How many good partnerships has Oracle actually had? :)

Oracle missed the train again. VMware and Oracle could have been a good partner many years ago. But nope, Oracle decided to build their own stacks.
