Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Walmart Associates - We Are So Fu**ed

Fellow Walmart Associates, it's sad to say but we are witnessing the start of our demise. Think about what has happened and the thinking and planning that went into the current events below. Does any of this sound coincidental?

1) The new store schedules (CAP).

2) Stores closing at midnight.

3) Surveillance of associates and customers.

4) Wholesale cuts of several full time positions.

5) Store associate hours cut.

6) Optical Labs reductions.

7) Forced eval curve rankings.

8) Home Office positions and technology positions being replaced and shifted to India, California, New Jersey, etc.

You would have to be blind not to see the foreboding that is laying out in front of us.

Take charge of your future. Get your resume in order. You still have time if you start planning now. The US unemployment rate is very low and the job market is in a "job seekers" favor. If you don't take the steps to break away from Walmart now, you are likely to miss the best opportunity in years to move into a better employment situation.

This is not the good walmart what makes it bad is the board of directors and CEO implementing all these changes and it's not for the better. I think walmart is jumping the gun as far as elimination with no proper solutions in place. I do recognize some changes needs to happen to keep up with copetition but it's not being done right.

Listen, it is what it is. If you're working for Walmart, then you made that choice yourself. You screwed yourself. So quit complaining and just get out. It's not hard to find another job right now, and many companies are offering nice benefits and bonuses. You can see yourself, Walmart doesn't give a hoot about you and you don't owe them anything. Just quit. Do it on your terms. Sell your house before the market drops out then get out. It's not that hard to understand.

My husband and I saw this coming 5 years ago, and 3 years ago walked thru the open door. OUT! The manager who filled the exit paperwork told us we would be back soon. My husband told her she was screwed in her head. He put up with so much BS from them it wasn't funny. He was a trainer, UNPAID. Support manager, UNPAID. Dept manager, UNPAID. He also trained assistant managers, and that was unpaid, too. By unpaid, I mean he was paid his regular rate as a STOCKER. We had the greatest times there, but on the way out the door, he was wearing a piece of mistletoe on his back belt loop to show just what he thought of this useless company. Between the 2 of us, we had 33 years experience, and he retired and I went elsewhere for more money to start then what I was making when I left. Bentonville Blows, ALWAYS......

If you live in a job desert, get out. Would you expect people who lived in a real desert, with no reliable food or water, to just stay there, or would you expect them to go somewhere that gave them a chance to survive? Same thing. Move. No, it isn’t easy or cheap. But I did it a while ago and I’m glad I did. Go where the opportunities are.

I'm not sure working for a company that routinely screws over their employees is my definition of a 'Job oasis'. Sounds to me like you're not taking responsibility for your own situation. How are you going to feel when every Walmart job in Bentonville is moved to the west coast, India or new jersey and you're laid off or fired due to the forced curve? What will you do then? Bentonville will be the next Detroit. Your oasis will turn into a barren wasteland.

I agree with others. Get out now. There's too many good companies and good positions to stay.

Leaving Walmart sounds great but for those of us who are unable to relocate, Walmart has created a job oasis in an otherwise jobless desert.

There are some unions at Walmart.

I left Walmart (home office) in Bentonville in early May of this year. I'm working in the Dallas metro area now. My new employer gave me a $3500 sign-on bonus, plus a relocation package and the pay is 23% higher. And, I'm working 8 hours a day, not 9. The benefits are better and the part I pay is cheaper. They have free drinks and snacks in the break room. There's no forced evaluation curve. I can flex my start time and stop time. Management and leadership is genuinely nice.

People, if you're staying at Walmart in Bentonville thinking anything is going to change, then you're a fool. It's as simple as that.

And to all my old friends, I feel for you most of all. I'm not sure why you continue to put up with it. Believe me, Walmart has no loyalty to you. Not anymore.

You’ll never get a union in at Walmart. Get over it and be glad you have a job.

@3grx....you must work in Porterville Ca! Sounds exactly like my store manager. She's a perfect example of wasted payroll! If she's not hiding in her office, shes screaming at someone. It makes me sick when she tells the new associates how wonderful she is and how she started as an hourly. She worked in my store as a dpt mgr and padded like crazy on inventory so she got promoted and the poor lady that took over her dpt got reamed the next year because of shrink that she had nothing to do with. She is a joke and one of the worst managers I've seen in this company. She cheats, lies, and throws her associates under the bus to get ahead. Typical walmart store manager.

In regards to the 8 hour days on the coasts. Didn't anyone tell you? The 45 hour work week in Bentonville was a myth! You put that on yourselves! We've had normal working hours the entire time! /s

That conversation literally played out on Slack. Walmart management is as confused as they come, desperately trying to figure out how to come into the modern era.

I just put applications into several other companies and have started building relationships with recruiters. Based on what I'm seeing, the pay range for my role is greater than 20% outside of Walmart. Why did I wait so long?

I have to jump into this now. Target has a good reputation of employee friendly management and yes the pay is better. The stores are nicer and the benefits are better.

Now about the UNION. I've always hated unions, but, Walmart associates need something at the stores because we keep getting screwed time after time. This cap stuff is creating hate and discontent. People are really angry and I mean really angry. No one needs this kind of crap.

My cousin told me Walmart will hire anyone and I believe it now. I see a lot of turnover at my store. I've only been there less than 2 years and I've seen at least 100 come and go.

It's sad. I wonder if any of the big management people in bentonville ever read these comments? Just send them to visit some stores unannounced and see for them selves. When my store knows someone is coming, they make us work for a week to make everything look wonderful and only have their favorites out on the floor when someone comes.

My store manager is probably the worst example of someone that should be in charge. She yells, screams, has her little favorites and sits in her office and plays on her phone all the time.

Unions are dead as Tupac, and deservedly so. Their own greed and unreasonable demands killed them. Where they once served a legit need (which is, ironically, fast coming back), they now account for less than 10% of the labor force and are almost 100% obsolete.

The closest thing to hope for their return will be a new Democratic Administration. As long as Republicans run this place, you'll neeeeeeeever see union strength again.

What we really need now is a UNION. A union can protect our hours and schedules so we can have some stability in our home life. A union can protect store associates from the stupid actions we're subjected to daily at the store. Actually, forget that. I'm just going to walk away. Almost anyplace will pay better and be better. My sister works at Target and she loves it.

HR_Please_Don't_Hate_Us, great post! Would you have any insight as to the next round of layoffs within the Home Office? Which areas? Heard realty may take hit end of Q2 due to the recent realignment with Central OPNs, nothing substantiated though.

hindsight is 20/20 its like leaving a toxic relationship. been there done that. All this time you think they really cared about you, but in the end it was all about them and what you could do for them, in the end you are devastated (because this is all you live and breathe) but as time goes by, you find something better that will treat you better and appreciate you.

HR (who ever you are), thank you for the post. It's entirely correct. The economy is firing on all cylinders and there's jobs available all over the US at dramatically higher wages. In the Bentonville home office area (NW Arkansas), Walmart plays the "Big Dog" game - they're the big dog so they can get away with any kind of BS they can dream up, and they do, and they will. What's it going to be next? Does Bentonville get to go to a 8 hour day like the left coast and New Jersey? Does the HO get the same benefits as left coast and everyone else? Does Bentonville get the same pay? Unlimited vacation (PTO) like Crackafornia and every place else? Don't hold your breath, home office will never see any of that because associates at the home office are not the "Key Talent". Let's see if they can put lipstick on this pig.

I will tell you all I was a thirty year associate. I worked in the DC’s for twenty years and transportation for ten years and was let go in April. I recently accepted a position as a area manager with another company and it’s been a great experience. If severance is offered take it and leave. There is life after Walmart and it’s better than you think.

Not to be a buzz kill, but that U.S. Dept, of Labor statistic on high job rates is bullsh!t. We're in a time where any given Capitol Hill administration puffs up those numbers to win re elections.

Otherwise, yes: get the resume in order. Look seriously into leaving retail in general, and focus on getting some kind of specialized education in particular. It doesn't need to be a college degree, tech programs pay just as good depending on the field you choose. Trucking is very hot right now, and I predict will become more so in the foreseeable future.

You weren't born at Walmart, and it's not the end of your life to leave there, either.
