Na. Wireline will be divested. Why waste money buying out employees when you can simply sell them off?

@iqdlin my area I doubt if even 10% of the techs do anything copper related as of now 2018. Why worry about a potential abandonment in 2025. It sort of already is. The way they build here everything is shared to the point of that the outside plant is blurred into one entity VZ's network. I guess ultimately that makes sense as it is a complex network. Cables are double lashed to each other on the same hangers from the same poles in the same ROWs inside the same duct banks often in the same ducts, passing through the same man holes terminating in the same structures etc. I haven't touched copper much at all in the last 10 years. The last time being for restoration of service in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. We are plenty busy and undermanned now before any sort of "mega" build. They will need to hire if they want to speed up there plans. We already work more OT than most want here. There are many "no s" on a callout.
@1njw ,, I am from the wireline side and basically agree. My only concern is that they keep the transport side of the C.O.s and spin off the switching/copper/OSP to a separate company and then sub out the build out to the spun off company. Having a basic understanding of the build out for the next 10 years the only thing the company really needs from the C.O. environment is the transport side...that worries me a bit.
Factor in the fact telco can basically ( in many cases ) abandon copper in I think 2024/2025 this makes me wonder how much of the OSP copper support and techs will be kept. We might see a new boom in contractors in the near future.
@iphi I agree about the mega OT and am leaving in the end as well but disagree about the sale. It would be id--tic to pay good money to build out a state of the art network just to sell it off and then pay a competitor to lease it in order to operate the business. They are already stuck leasing out in many of the unrepresented areas.
Well vz will probaly use us and pay mega ot to get their 5g up and running ,so ill take the extension then most of us will be out.if we are sold off,it is what it is...
With regard to the sale of wireline, I believe the contract extension is a clear indicator that that will not happen.
Perhaps someone realized that wireline is a critical part of the 5G deployment.

In my experience people that don’t know what they are doing and don’t know what they are talking about are the most mean and nasty. It’s like a self-defense mechanism so that you don’t bother asking them anything.
I just don’t get the nastiness & animosity displayed here...aren’t we all kinda in the same boat?

I believe EISP offers will be minimal for the near future. There is an enormous amount of work that needs to be done to wire up this 5G project, the more wireless it gets the more wires (fibers) needed. So it is best to just make a boatload of cash over the next few years and punch out on your own schedule. I am sure there will be a few sporadic and targeted offers but certainly not widespread, at best when the project winds down they might incentivize a larger group to retire. Only time will tell. I intended to leave in 2 years but it seems like it will be worth it to stay at least until early 2023 if the OT continues.
Regarding a sale due to a new contract is a ludicrous argument for several reasons. Any prospective buyer will now have even greater future liabilities due to the higher labor costs and need to be able to prove they can afford it and operate as a viable business or financing will never materialize. So why not make a sale prior to a new contract claim poverty and force concessions? Why attempt to work with your workforce to attack a project crucial to your future as a business so you can sell what you are building before it is complete to a competitor? Why not just shut it down or fire sale it and not even bother with it at all if it is a burden, a dinosaur, etc. ? The reason is they need to build 5G to stay ahead of the competition not to sell it to them. This new guy may actually be on to something unlike Lowell.

@irmp you are posting on the wrong site. Frontier has a layoff page. You can search for it at the top of your screen. They where sold off before several contracts ago.
We did not get sold to Frontier. They will never sell NY. Frontier has no money it is bankrupt. No company will follow their example. There is a great deal of absurdity discussed here.

@jcy: Pretty obvious? To who? Extending the contract would make it harder to sell, as the contract would go along with it.
Its pretty obvious wireline will be sold off soon.
I think the days of the EISP's are done after the new contract expires.
Hard to know what the company is thinking but I think EISP’s will still be offered but nobody knows to which departments.
