Sears/Kmart reputation is so bad in our county that no one will even think about working here. The pay is the lowest by around $1 per hour or more. there are plenty of businesses within walking distance that pay more, offer more benefits, have more hours and that don't look like something from the 1980's. I still work here because I just don;t feel like looking for another job and I dont want to work that many hours, just enough to have money to play with.

We were suppose to hire 10 people for the summer and only three people applied and only one actually showed up for their first day. After the 6 hours of training to be put on the floor they quit after the first week saying that the pay did not match the amount of work done or the lack of hours they were getting vs. the amount of hours they were promised.

Turnover at the stores was absolutely mind boggling when I was a Sears ASM. I can only imagine how much worse the turnover situation has gotten in the two years since I've left. When I was there, filling positions was like playing whack-a-mole. I read this board off and on out of curiosity and it sounds like things have gotten much worse, so I don't know if I could blame the new hires for wanting to leave and I can only imagine how daunting the task must be for SGMs, ASMs, supervisors and leads to bring in and keep people in such a turbulent company.

I do remember when staffing shortages got so bad in our district that our market recruiter set up "hiring happy hours" in the stores, to bring anyone with a pulse in to work for us. Even then, not very many people showed up for the events, but anybody who did basically got hired with very little input from those of us at the store. This was after the district manager ranted on a conference call telling all of us that being too picky in making our hiring decisions was the reason why we were not filling positions. Maybe that was a little true, but lowering our standards wouldn't have helped either, because then we got people who had a poor work ethic who couldn't get in anywhere else. I learned that way back when I was a rookie working as a shift leader at a fast food joint in high school. I thought it was a desperate attempt to staff the stores. Half of those new hires were gone in a course of a month and none stayed beyond 90 days. It was a waste of time and effort.

Even without the wholesale hiring events, it was a real struggle. I think simply raising the hourly pay would have gone a long way in retaining people but none of the people in charge of those decisions would hear of it.

When I was interviewed for the job I'm at now, they told me it's good that I'm getting out.

I just left as well. The best part is that not a single interviewer asks why you're leaving. They just say "Well... I don't have to ask why you're leaving so we'll just skip that one ;) "

The smart ones left ages ago....I interviewed for an amazing job yesterday. I was asked to describe my position with Sears in great detail which I did. I didn't say anything disparaging, negative, or untrue. I just highlighted my duties over the course of my 7 year tenure at Sears, and how it had changed.

At the end, the HR VP said, "You've shown incredible resilience to serve under those circumstances and yet, not say anything bad about the company".

I only mention this to say you really don't know how toxic Sears is until you've left.

Yup. It's about to get ugly. We're in the final days and SHLD is about to start going through the final throes of death. A lot of people will want to just get out of there and get away before the money runs out in a few weeks.
