Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

how will the employees ranked vs. managers at the same pay grade level?

The salary realignment this year put many employees at the same pay grade level as their managers, who didn't get a promotion. Would this cause a problem at ranking? Seems that a lot of managers have resentment toward this and may intentionally rank the employees low.

An aggressive young manager who worked like hell for her promotion would certainly resent a 30 year layabout who was promoted to the same PSG just for showing up on time and complimenting her suggestions in meetings. The 30 year employee would, therefore, be ranked a 2. Again. I guess if you don't like it you can potentially refuse the promotion.

Managers are great at looking after one another - so not to worry.

So in an attempt to deflect your mistake by an aggressive offense, you begrudgingly imply that you were wrong. You said "can" - not "will". ecg said "could" - not "did". ecg was making a hypothetical statement that reinforced the question of the OP. You went on the attack accusing ecg of having done it. Now you have finally taken the time to read before speaking. Just say you were wrong straight up. Stop convoluting your own arguments

@1bsv, First off, it’s not important whether the person is a he or a she. The word “he” is universally accepted for when the person’s gender is not identified or is not germane to the topic. Second, and more importantly, the point is that a manager MOST CERTAINLY CAN allow your ranking to be placed lower in order to promote another employee’s ranking. Not everybody can be ranked a 1 or 2+. A demotion forced ranking score can deliberately be lodged against anyone if the manager allows it to happen. You cannot fail to recognize these ranking sessions are held offsite or in a secured area of the office building. This is done to maintain privacy and secrecy because even though there are certain protocols to be followed, most of what goes down in these annual meetings is very subjective in nature. If someone with influence wants to hold you back or roll you under the bus, it can happen.

How do you know ecg is a “he?” You all seem to read what you want to read. I read the hypothetical that “he” could lower someone’s evaluation but did not. Seems like a good manager to me but probably not like that in every case.

Amazing. That isn’t what ecg said at all. The poster was answering the original question saying that it was hypothetically possible. Nothing more.

I have direct reports at my PSG level and above. I’m only allowed in the room to describe their performance which I suppose I could do poorly if I was that insecure. My thought is if I’m managing a poor performer that doesn’t reflect well on me either. I’m not in the room when the ranking occurs for the particular level.

2- or 3 can get people laid off, if the managers intend to rank subordinates lower than them?
