The more things change the more they stay the same it appears. As reorgs are taking shape it appears that the old saw of saving money by outsourcing is in vogue.

Not withstanding certain employees, do 'partners' really care about the bottom line as much as the company?

Someone once said that the idea of an ideal number of employees to a CEO would be ONE, the guy with a big bucket (presumably the CEO him/herself) of money directing contractors directly. Reducing overhead is important (certainly looks good to the street) but I think this will translate into higher overall costs. Time will tell

Will the office in Manila continue to be open and functional once the company moves to Project 2020?

Will Project 2020 eliminate the need for outsourcing financial work to Manila? Isn’t the intention of that project is to move data to the cloud? If that occurs will a need continue to exist for SAP and Ariba? I want to expand my job opportunities by not including finance jobs when posting for open positions if the scope for those positions is bleak.

@1qse, I’m sure if it’s called the “Nifty Fifty”. But, I’ve heard of the “ C Suite” as those in the upper echelon of the company. Is that what you were getting at?

@Up3vw4v-1mut, not just Manila. I'm referring to more extensive outsourcing, not just the financial services. I agree the 'lessons learned' (which will never be done) would have been instructive. I'm struck with the notion that the optics related to outsourcing looks good from an outside (i.e. the street) perspective esp. as relates to 2nd Q results. Share buy backs are another 'old saw' that is being used. These very big, blunt instruments WILL have unintended consequences. They are short term fixes (that the market seems to appreciate) to a deeper structural problem.

I'm amused that the 'nifty 50' (or whatever they call the top echelon today) with all their cumulative experience and intelligence can't come up with a more nuanced and effective approach, rather than the same old same old. I know a few of these 'high and mighties' and their egos always seem to get in the way.

@trp, there are tradoffs to everything. Chevron has what they think is sufficient oversight with the outsourced services in Manila. The company has expat presence there to oversee things, but in the final analysis, the old proverb “the proof in in the pudding” will reveal to us if it was a good plan or not.

Isn’t Manila always a viable option to saving the company money? A number of jobs that were at one time US jobs in Downstream/Midstream are now being handled by Manila. Where is the company’s oversight of the folks in Manila or is oversight necessary?

Outsourcing has another advantage. It distances the hiring company from having to account for demographic quotas, political correctness, affirmative action and other Department of Labor hogwash. As a hiring company, you are just taking the contractors that fulfill your requirements. Although I’m sure the hiring company can privately convey the real “desired requirements” to the outsourced company and get past the BS that would otherwise obligate them to overweight themselves in useless employees in permanent payroll. This is the trickery that companies find themselves having to resort to in order to operate profitably in the Bizarro World that progressives have implemented in the US labor market. The end justifies the means.

Outsourcing does not entirely relieve a hiring company of paying out the salaries it currently does to its own employees. The company you are outsourcing from needs to pay its employees a salary and benefits commensurate with its employee talents. So, on the payroll burden side of things, it’s about a wash. The benefit a hiring company gets from outsourcing is the ability to let contracted personnel go at the drop of a hat and not be responsible for having to pay severances or be sued in court for discrimination.
