This is part of a multi-year effort by Amazon. They were doing heavy manual configuration of Oracle databases anyway.
The worse news for Oracle is that customers who are moving to AWS and Google Cloud are using AWS and Google databases, not Oracle. Oracle refuses to support Google Cloud (although Google has a new co-lo program) and charges double the license fee to run on AWS. That's not encouraging the use of Oracle cloud - it's alienating customers.
This is just the start of a very bad series of events that will mark the end of Ellisons days at Oracle.
Its not enough that Amazon will stop using Oracle, its that Amazon will talk about how they did it all the time. It will be something that they trumpet at every move. You want to have fun? Go to Re:invent this year.
This will not end with Amazon, other projects at other key vendors of SaaS products at companies like Salesforce have been underway for a long time now. We can expect that prior to Oracleworld, Benioff to announce that Salesforce is no longer using Oracle.
It wont end there. "leaving oracle' will be a badge of competence in the industry.
This is the headwind that the good ship Oracle is sailing into, with a leaky hull, no charts, in bad weather, with a aged "past his prime captain" at the helm, backed by a useless lackey at his side telling the crew 'Full steam ahead" as he reassures the ships owners that everything will be fine if they can just toss more of the older crew members overboard faster.
