There will not be a "HUGE" layoff on August 31 or any other day. The layoffs are gradual, affecting a couple of departments at a time. They can and will happen anytime. With few exceptions (e.g. Netsuite), Oracle's products are considered "legacy." There are few if any new Oracle projects. Oracle will continue to get billions in revenue from renewals, but even that will keep declining. ORCL maintains its price by providing dividends and high margins, so with lower revenue, they have no choice but to cut costs and lay people off. Field sales will be a few sales reps who handle renewals. Sales consulting, to the extent that it exists at all, is being moved to the hubs and staffed by new college hires. Customer Success (CSM) personnel and consultants will have a job as long as they are brining in paid revenue; if not, you are fired. They certainly will not do a massive layoff on the last day of a fiscal quarter when there are still deals that could be closed that day.

My advice to USA employees on the 8/31 RIF danger list is to start learning about your health insurance options now rather than wait until the axe falls, especially if you are single and can't latch on to a spouse plan. Safra takes away your health insurance coverage at midnight on RIF day. You can get back a month of coverage retroactively if you sign up for COBRA. You should probably do that but COBRA is $$$ to pay into for more than a few months. Learn everything you can about Obama Care now, there are lots of twists and turns with it.
