Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

It’s unthinkable that you and Senior executives behaved in such a manner

Dear John ,

A simple and open question.. How could you as a CEO show up in a Club , on whatever Day, any Day , Walse through a Club never engage an Associate, touch base with any Manager take pictures send them out and leave a Club in absolute turmoil. Is that how you see your role? Did you know what happened, meet any Associates , ask why a situation was that way? It’s unthinkable that you and Senior executives behaved in such a manner. Then you’re leaving the Club smiling on your way out the door. If what these folks suggest is true. You missed a chance to learn some things. Do you think if you behaved more graciously. Not to suggest maybe the Club is not right, but your empathy and grace in that situation would say more about your Leadership than I’m sure the actual outcome produced. Did you know the Club Team , what the struggles were or are? How hard the Team in the Club worked. Instead you took a moment in time. That happens in our Clubs every day, and you behaved like a light weight. You chose to play gotcha! The Club here closed? What goes round comes round.

Karma comes back to you. It will catch up to you. Just think of the opportunity missed. What a Leader you could’ve been. But weren’t ! You do not deserve to lead our Company.

That previous reply brings up an extremely valid point. We should be 100% committed and devoted to serving the needs of the members on a daily basis rather than playing the “I gotcha!” game with the market, regional and home office regime. It’s truly absurd. Constantly being assigned notes on whatever the flavor of the day or whatever knee-jerk reaction they come up with is tired and old and most importantly is an absolute waste of productivity that should be focused upon serving the needs of our members......not trying to replicate some picture at a club of some “WOW” display or some ridiculous merchandising that is deemed the be all-end all of retail. Get grip and go back to the basics. Making your impressions and making sure your footprints are noticed only go so far (Market, Regionals and on up). Take care of your people and the positive results will follow. Fear mongering will only make you look good for so long.

I hate the gotcha game. Even if this may/may not be true, I have seen it first hand with Regional Managers. Sending in their friends or portraying themselves as a customer to see how the associate responds in the situation, then having market coaching associates on job performance. I know it is a business as well, but we should be teaching and training, not coaching people out for things they were not adequately trained on. It's sad when you go into work each day not trying to serve the customers, who we should regard as the Boss, but being in fear of being written up for not saying or doing things exactly as they want.

Get real ! An executive visit requires they introduce themselves . Clearly you miss the point if not a troll . Many people would not know him or the traveling companions....

It’s just respectful and proper protocol. There is no defense or excuse for such arrogant behavior. Where was the Manager?

Did he make it in, have a heart attack ten minutes ago. Tied up w a Club issue. If a Club is not right they own it, they are there!

How could you walk out if it’s not right?

It’s absurd and ridiculous to even attempt to defend such behavior. From the CEO none the less!!

How could John Furner walk in a Club, take pictures and no one engage with him?? Do the Management Team and Associates not know what our Leader looks like? Were you not practicing our 10 ft Rule? Look at the whole picture guys..how could he come and you not engage. Sounds like your to blame.

Really says everything about Furners Leadership or lack of it. More it is telling about the Company. Look at the reputation this Company and Wal Mart have . No viable Candidates will consider this Company it’s a career killer. You’ll be fearing layoffs every year or abuse from some id--t Market Manager , or HO nit wit walking in Sat night telling you the Clubs a mess! Really come visit more frequently, you will have your eyes opened. You cannot get people because no one unless they are desperate would seek employment here. It’s a diversity driven , not in a good way organization. Loaded with incompetents. They have no respect for any Club Managers , ASMs or Associates ... it a sick dying Company. Signs are everywhere. Get out now!

It's very sad that this is the culture within this business now. It's all about fear and blame. It's true that we all have the right to quit anytime, but in reality many of us need our jobs and even care about our clubs and co-workers. I'm thankful for this site and I'm sure the people in home office visit it everyday so I want to say this: I understand that this is a business. I understand that you pay me to do a job, but please please try to remember we are human beings. I've seen how cruel you are to our GM's and it rolls downhill into every facet of our clubs. Stop pulling the rug put from under us. You may be wealthy but I feel more sorry for you than for the people losing their jobs. They worked hard for a paycheck. You sold your soul.
