What's the deal with unused vacation and a severance package?

Joyfully taking advantage of a well-timed "transformation" to get the heck out of this job.

What is the deal with severance and unused vacation? There is an end date for the package ("last day on the books") but I figure they will just show you the door once they can't really get any more work out of you.

I have several weeks of unused vacation. Do they typically pay it out or make you take the vacation days?

Do they honor the package details they announced (including prorated STI) or do they look for every excuse to screw you out of it?

They want me to stay in a different position so I am afraid they might try to penalize me in some way since I am not "one of the people they want to get rid of". LOL

You get your vacation time maybe not the personal time. It shows up two weeks after the severance check the order for mine was.

Last paycheck two weeks after release

Severance check 4 weeks after release

PTO paid 6 weeks after release.

Good point. I'm pretty sure they do the same thing in California and probably other states. So you might want to try to find that information for your state before you decide.

I got paid for vacation days about three weeks after my last official day of work. Severance pay took longer.

You should get paid for any unused vacation days (time) on your last paycheck.

Personal holidays not taken are lost if not taken.

STI is prorated if its part of your separation package and is written in the termination agreement.
