Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Is this really possible? I thought HQ was bad...

We had a pedestal fan in the corner of our appliance department. The CAC had a pair of clip on fans. The hub office had a couple fans and the backroom had a box fan. Then came the energy audit and all the fans were taken away and thrown in the compactor. I am more upset at the fact that they didn't even bother donating them than the fact that they took them away.

Ever since we had the energy audit we have to go around the building every single night to turn off all the LCD monitors of all the kiosks and workstations in every department and all the offices. That's about 30 total. The funny thing is that the computer units are all left on and those use more electricity than the LCD monitors.

We are not allowed to plug in any phone or tablet chargers in the breakroom. I guess 0.95 watts will send the power bill through the roof. I'm surprised they haven't taken away our microwave, TV, fridge and Keurig machine. Because of the audit, we did lose our water cooler that we won from that credit contest a while back. The district facilities manager and QMT said it wasn't allowed. Now it's sitting in the corner of our breakroom collecting dust.

Because of the audit, all the lights inside are turned off when we leave the store for the night, making it pitch black. If the police ever needed to respond to a break in or something in the middle of the night, they wouldn't be able to see inside, where before, they'd have a pretty clear view inside since the lights closest to the entrances and a few other random lights were kept on overnight. But now? Not anymore. Most of our parking lot and all of our lighting on the exterior of the store is turned off, even our signage. It's not a coincidence that we've been broken into twice and have been tagged numerous times by vandals overnight since they cracked down on the lights. We even had a few homeless who occupied a dark, enclosed corner outside the back of our store, which is not lit at all. It was lit until the audit. They would leave their trash and excrement for our cleaning guy to deal with the next morning. No joke.

@3xuw - The outcomes of the energy audit is dependent on the DFM, DM, QMT and SGM with general guidelines from corporate facilities director. So while one store/district will recognize that things like PC monitors are trivial, others will insist on turning them off at night. The people making the decision to turn them off are ill-informed. First of all monitors are never truly off if you hit the power button and that goes for all other electronics. All electronics draw a trivial amount of current as long as they are plugged in. Second of all, the wattage ratings of the computer monitors, whether on or during sleep, are comically small.

Decisions like this are made all the time in this company because most of the people in charge of making decisions are not qualified to make decisions, which is why we are in the mess we are in.

Every fourth light in our store is left on. Computers are left on but all printers are turned off. A/C is set to high and the humidity is horrible. Heat is non-existant for the most part. Backroom is like a cave where every third light has no bulbs.

This total bs. We had the energy audit and were told about all kinds of lights to leave on, also told not to bother turning off the lcd monitors as the savings was insignificant after they went to sleep.

You guys and you bs stories on here.

Anybody getting layed off???

The reason why those stores are fully lit could be because the city or the mall requires them to do so. I could see such a requirement especially if it is closed because squatters could break in and trash the place.

If there are no rules they have to follow for having to turn the lights on they will not turn the lights on. My store (still open and running) has most of the lights off at night because the city or the mall does not have any rules for lights being on.

This is interesting to hear since the former Sears at Macomb Mall in Michigan has sat empty since last September (At Home took half the store), and it is fully lit 24 hours a day. The same can be said for my former top-performing local Kmart in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. It closed in January, and it is fully lit inside 24 hours a day...so is the parking lot and former entryway under the overhang! I know SHLD is paying Seritage for these empty locations, but what a waste!

Come on people!!! We must ALL do our part to ensure ESL is able to air condition the "Fountainhead".....His ONE HUNDRED THIRTY MILLION DOLLAR YACHT.

You don't need fans, coffee makers, or air conditioned stores when our dear CEO is forced to economize with Russian caviar instead of Beluga......Do you think I'm kidding?

I don't know why you all complain and moan when we should ALL be doing our part...

@iuf I'm surprised that you turn off your computers. We were told to turn the monitors off but to keep the computers running so corporate could update them overnight. I doubt that they are updated every single night because I've noticed that whenever they have to be updated the computers usually takes about a whole day to do it, even though it was left running the night before. Obviously we don't do updates all that frequently because if we did, we would never be able to use the computers because they'd take forever to finish.

@cgs I'd feel pretty bad if the police showed up to our store for a burglary/vandalism call in the middle of the night and got ambushed by some crook emeging from the darkness all because we wanted to save a few bucks by keeping the lights off. It's a danger to their safety and it's a danger to ours. And, having the lights off caused our store to get vandalized multiple times and was the result of our store getting broken into. We face a fairly busy freeway and even though everybody is going 70 mph, a crook would be hard pressed to attempt a break-in or vandalism on a sufficiently lit store right off the freeway. Now that our property is mostly dark, it's difficult to see what's going on. You can even pull right up to our main entrance after store hours and miss somebody who is loitering out by the doors since it is pitch black. It's worse out back. There's been some homeless people sleeping in some semi-hidden areas.

It's kind of creepy for those of us on opening and closing shifts in the winter when the daylight is cut short. We have to walk across the dark parking lot to and from our cars. We all walk out and leave the building together but every so often there would be a few shady looking cars parked in an unlit corner of our parking lot and then there's all these little "crevices" where bad guys could hide, like behind the transformer boxes or between the compactor bin and things like that. All of those areas have lights but they are never switched on. And what can we possibly do if somebody wanted to attack? The window of opportunity is a lot wider in poorly lit areas.

A store in our district got reported to OSHA for having the building uncomfortably hot.....The building was an icebox after that.

Our store has the water coolers turned off, the coffee maker removed, every other light in the back and office removed and the temperature risen in the summer and lowered in the winter. the outside lights are now turned off and the sign is turned off. The computers are turned off at closing and any other lights are turned off. Our QMT told us that it might save us $150 a year by doing these things but that is what corporate wants. When the fate of the whole company comes down to $150 dollars a store then we are doomed. And I know that $150 X a few hundred stores equals real money but the point is that customers are uncomfortable, the employees are uncomfortable and unsafe and really I would pay $150 to have AC or heat. The end not near, it is here.

We briefed a case in business law in which a facility did not provide adequate lighting for safety. Wanton disrespect for public safety. A gal had been raped in the dark corner at the facility. The plaintiff won the case.

Totally worth $$ for payroll and travel expense to pay people to unplug fans.

Believe me the QMT's and DFM's are just doing what they are told to do. Corporate checks the energy report every week and if you are over plan the Dfm get a nasty gram. They are going after the low hanging fruit. No money the fix the AC in the store.
