Thread regarding Sears layoffs

COBRA benefits

Can anyone that has been laid off advise on how long its takes our sh--ty former employer to advise on options and cost for COBRA? They are full of paperwork for things you don't need and tight-lipped and pull a disappearing act on information you actually need.

COBRA coverage is outrageous. Plans in the ACA were much cheaper, and covered just as much. But thanks to the republicans who run everything in DC, they gutted the ACA and failed to do anything about the rising cost of health care insurance since they've been in power. SAD!

The paperwork usually comes at the very last minute.....The last week of your last severance check. There's nothing stopping you from calling 1-88-SEARS to try to move the process along.

Typically you need to be notified within 30 days of your termination date. Yes, premiums will be higher but depending on your medical situation, it could be worthwhile to have instead of going in debt due to medical conditions. You may not want a break in coverage especially when it comes to a preexisting condition. (I don't know if the current changes to the ACA and medical coverage in general impacts breaks in coverage and preexisting conditions.)

Just an FYI...I was laid off in 2017 and I got a letter from the audit dept of unemployment yesterday and Sears wants my severance back. They are saying I didn't work those hours. They will try anything for $$$

Be prepared for a huge increase in premiums.

I received my paperwork shortly after they announced our store was closing. In my case COBRA was outrageously expensive. I found a better and much less expensive plan through the Affordable Care Act. Of course, there are many variables with the ACA depending on an individual's circumstances. Be prepared for some sticker shock; individual health plans are always more expensive than employer sponsored health plans!
