Forcing comp time

Is anyone else struggling with the overwhelming work load and dealing with managers that force comp time while telling you your not relevant if you can't do 50 hrs of work in 40 hrs. Not providing time to train while telling you that you need to be constantly learning to keep your job. My personal favorite is forcing everyone to 40 hrs, and then expecting you to monitor your email and answer your phone on your time.

Since my position was moved to a different department, I was told I was not allowed OT. In my previous dept, we weren't really allowed, either, but they understood it was sometimes necessary to work late to support the needs of the business, and as long as I let me mgr know why I went over, there wasn't any issue.

Now, however, I have to get permission in advance, or risk leaving work undone, even if it's only 1 or 2 hours over. Meanwhile our team has lost people and additionally the volume of work requests has risen which has more than doubled the workload for those of us remaining on the team. They refuse to hire anyone, even contractors, to give us some relief, and they won't pay us for our time. It fosters a really bad attitude to be this overworked and not be allowed to use the time needed to do an accurate and complete job.

It's also a pain when you work late early in the week, so you do a shortened schedule on Friday to not go over 40hrs and you get stuck with a firedrill right before you need to leave. Or you get dragged into something on Saturday and have to either beg for OT, do it without pay (nope!), or carryover that time into the next week. It's exhausting to have to track our time like that.

I guess I'm confused about the forcing everyone to work 40 hrs. Aren't you supposed to work 40? If you are a nonexempt employee working more than 40 hrs a week you should be paid overtime and comp time is only allowed if taken in the same week which we all know that's impossible

Just the other day I was scheduled to leave at 7. It was 15 mins until I was supposed to leave so I went to the back to do some vzlearns and submit some bs Salesforce leads like a good worker bee. There's only one person in the queue. My manager kept bugging me to go help this person when I politly tried to tell them that no, sorry, I had a lot of things to do after work (IT class, hurricane prep, ect. Ect.) But she got her feelings hurt and now I may face being written up because I had the gal to want to leave on time. I already stayed late twice this week. Sorry but not sorry if I want to go home and strike some semblance of a work/life balance.
