Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Dumb on so many levels.

Verizon is creating morale issues at a point in time when technology is about to explode and become more competitive then ever. They are sabatoging their own talent pool. The message Verizon is sending is loud and clear. No real direction. No clear course forward. In the near future they will be an unsuccessful technology company spiraling downward led into Oblivion by money men pretending to know something about engineering. Hans is not the right direction. Another company killed by Rich fools with big egos. Motorola, Nortel, etc...

Totally agree with @wwr... wireless leadership was arrogant, or maybe just naive about wireline complexities.

“Oneness” has not worked out. Wireline B and T sides of the house are still not entirely on the same page, then you throw W processes into the mix....

What a CF it is, I won’t miss having to watch all the bad leadership decisions they make.

My old director used to say Verizon succeeds in spite of itself. Well, that may finally be catching up.

All Verizon is today is a culture of fear masked by endless PR propaganda. Talent doesn't want to work in a culture of fear. Talent will go elsewhere leaving 20 and 30 year lifers that have little transferrable skills and are sedentary.

This company and AT&T are both on downward spirals with no end in sight until thwy hit bottom.

"Managers most certainly get paid more than 110k."

That's not even close. Very, very, very few companies pay tech managers as well as VZ does.

There's only a handful..... Google, Amazon, Netflix, Facebook.... I left a director job at a smaller tech company and took a manager position at VZ and got a 70% raise after factoring in STI and 401k. Granted I work a lot harder than I ever have before, but pay me like Verizon does, and I will clean the toilets 12 hours a day if that's what Verizon asks of me.

"talented people do not work at Verizon"

I've worked in tech for 30+ years and some of the most talented tech people I've ever worked with worked for VZ.... past tense. Many were already millionaires from successful startups and took these jobs because they were passionate about these projects and taking VZ places way beyond what our competitors can offer.

Almost all of them were RIFfed in Dec 2017 and had new jobs within a few weeks. The projects they were working on were cancelled or given keep the lights on budgets (even though at least one is still annually 9 figure profitable). These people were all under Marni. All VPs and most directors of these teams were also let go. Despite what many people here are saying, these senior level people, including the directors, were absolutely brilliant and very much hands on with these projects, coming into the office before everyone and last to leave.

It all started out great circa 2015, but every year money and people were taken away and execution got worse and worse..... or the Verizon processes got in the way and slowed everything to a crawl (legal, sourcing, procurement, inventory control, etc). Sure, there were some bumps along the way, that happens when you're trying to do something that's never been done before..... but the problem wasn't the talent (or lack thereof).

The level of talent around me has gone down significantly and I miss having those resources and decisiveness about direction. When we lost Marni, the nail went into the coffin on some VERY cool bleeding edge disruptive tech that nobody here knows about as much of it, even the project names, were on a need to know basis. These teams were the VZ equivalent of Google X. I realize that sounds like a tin foil hat comment, so you can choose to believe it or not, but I was working on several of these projects and am incredibly disappointed because at least one of them I would have loved to use in my every day life and we would have sold tens of millions of them at the price point we were targeting.

In the 4 years I've been here, my division has gone from a culture of innovation to stagnation. Say what you want about Marni, but she had some really grand visions and I miss the executive level support we had from her.

This is what happens to companies that do not promote performing employees, and insist on untrained degree holders for technical jobs that take decades to master. I was part of last years VZW layoffs, now almost exactly one year later they are up to it again. They constantly brought in new kids right out of college and overpaid them because they have a piece of paper, rather than any real life work experience, or technical skills. When they needed people, instead of promoting existing, qualified, and loyal employees, they paid premium cash to hire more newbies with degrees that had to be trained by the existing employees on how to do the job they were "qualified" to perform. The culture of rewarding employees for their hard work and loyalty has been replaced with one of stabbing your coworkers back to get ahead for a chance at a diminishing performance bonus opportunity. Also the management structure is insane, there are far too many managers for an ever decreasing workforce. Many of the managers are paid $110K + annually with a $20k bonus on top of that, plus health benefits most people would give their right nut for. Verizon is like an 18 year old college student with a maxed out credit card looking to pawn anything to free up more cash because they have no money to live off of and the rent is due. So laying off people instead of practicing fiscal responsibility is somehow going to give them the cash flow they need to deploy 5G. And outsourcing a critical component of "The Network" AKA the IT department, overseas to India in order to save another $700 million is more important than network security. This is totally hypocritical because part of the Verizon brand has always been "the network" , this just further supports my view that the company is lead by mo--ns that got their way to the top NOT by working their way up the ladder, but by being hired in with no prior industry experience or loyalty to the company. That is how the disconnect between management and the employees started, and it will ultimately be what ruins the company.

I've been working here for several decades, I know how many Indians are in my office.

H1B Visa holders were not exempt. I know of one person who was rebadged and he isn't sure how things will pan out.

Yes outsourcing and h1B are similar in some things. However with a H1B, the salary is higher my multiple times and gets paid here. So taxes are paid here and also the spending by these people is here helping the economy

That said H1 should be restricted to specialty skills

@rhe you realize that only 60+ of the 1200 rebadged employees are H1s right. I am not sure if H1s have been protected from rebadging

Half of the company is Indian already, so I don't see what the difference is between outsourcing or bringing over H1B visas.

Outsourcing has been going on for years, the old MCI WorldCom folks can attest to this as thousands of stateside hourly people have been let go quietly over the last 7 yrs. Everything from ordering, billing, provisioning, project management in both VES and VBM. Then replacing onshore upper management with wireless folks hoping they dont notice the complexity of the work, and can be just people managers. News flash - it didnt work well. .....The wireless managers attempting to manage workflows they didn't realize were so complex.

If anything the tax cuts emboldened V to offshore more work. A billion dollar global fortune 15 company acting like its strapped for cash and shareholder value is ridiculous.

Verizon is the next Sprint, especially with Hans at the wheel. Outsourcing has already started and once they don’t have enough people taking this package the rif will come.

Verizon customer service is too poor, high bills, no resolution to issues etc. It takes forever to fix the problem that they made or no resolution. They are digging the big hole with their actions where employees and customers are very unhappy about outsourcing jobs, high bills, not following the ethics and many more. They are hiring the executives from fired companies and those fired and unethical people are letting the good people go and also keeping their benefits and money. If you want to work for Verizon, you should have a qualification of fired from other companies. Finally what happens is it will come to an end.

If you don’t realize that Verizon is a technology company then you clearly do not pay attention. Do you really think all they do is provide service? Do some research.

When has Verizon ever been a technology company? Verizon is a service provider, similar to other utility companies; electric, water, sewage

repeat... Verizon is not a technology company
