Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Madawaska Maine Kmart

Why are they closing this store? It's a town of 4000 people with the nearest Walmart an hour away and no other discount/department stores! This store should be the ideal place for Kmart to make huge profits. They never stock it good, maybe if they had things available for sale they'd actually sell stuff. This is a complete joke that they couldn't make it work in Madawaska. It's an outrage that they're closing the Kmart in Madawaska Maine!

Canadians love to shop in the United States. I'm not sure about that part of Canada, but other parts have punishing sales taxes and also Walmart in Canada is more expensive than Kmart. There are things that you cannot get in Canada that are available in the United States. Maybe that part if Canada is different, but my experience has been that Canadians shop in the United States more than the other way around.

This is a stupid argument by OP, the store shut down in part because it's only 13 minutes away from a Walmart in Canada... right across the river. No less, this town has less than four thousand inhabitants. Try again, mo--n.

O.P.--Dont worry every kmart and sears will close by early next year. And if you had been paying attention to the company for the last 15 years you would have seen that it was not about making a profit in retail or even the customer. It has been and always will be about real estate, spin-offs, and selling brands. All to Eddie and his friends. So your one little store, even if it made 10 million dollars in profit (not sales, but profit) each year is worth less than the real estate it sits on and what it can be redevelped into or re-rented to someone for three times the rent. Hope everyone understands and finally sees the light.

A town of 4000 people simply can't support a 70,000 square foot big box retailer. You live in the woods. Embrace it. Hug a tree. Pet a beaver. Pay up for Amazon Prime.

YOU PEOPLE JUST DON'T GET IT! Eddie never ever wanted to run a retail business. When he bought Kmart and Sears it was for the real estate and the brands. All of the buildings he has acquired will be leased to other businesses and selling off the brands.

Also in Presque Isle Caribou an hour away there is 20,000 people and only Walmart and JC Penney. They had a Kmart there until 2016. Kmart could have owned northern Maine had then tried. There's a lot that needs to be answered. Susan Collins is from Caribou and she's pretty high profile. Perhaps she needs to be looking into what happened to Sears and Kmart.

Kmart executive: Hey there's this town in northern Maine where we don't have to compete with Walmart and Target to sell Halloween candy, instead of carrying what we do at other Kmarts, let's just carry a third of the variety and leave the shelves empty! Gross gross gross incompetence with what corporate did to the Madawaska Kmart. They only had to compete with dollar stores and a small supermarket!

Can Eddie tell Seritage to lower the rent? If so then everyone is correct when they say he's crooked.

It's been for lease since 2013....

@sqw; Lease it to somebody else at a significantly higher rent. That's the whole point; being a landlord is a much more profitable venture than running a chain of stores, especially one that's had its infrastructure so intentionally gutted over the past two decades as SHC has.

Maybe they'll reopen it after BK? What the hell is Seritage going to do with a stand alone store in northern Maine? It should never have been sold.

The worst is that this Kmart is across the river from a Canadian city. This could have been another Kmart Guam if they had tried!

A Target would be shocking, there's a couple of cities an hour away with 20,000 people that doesn't have a Target, Kohl's, or anything but Walmart and J C Penney.

I bet a Target goes in there, they are taking over a Sears Cape Cod.

It's not about Kmart caring about their customers, it's about Kmart actually taking advantage of a wide open chance to make money. Madawaska is not only an hour from Walmart, it's an hour to Walmart and then nothing else but Walmart for a further 3 hours. Madawaska Kmart could have minted money for the company the same as Guam if the company had actually tried.

They closed this store because the rent was too high. If they had kept it company owed then it probably would have stayed open.

The question is why Kmart didn't try there. Why when you own the market wouldn't you carry all the products that would actually sell there? Instead they send all the products to places where they're competing with Walmart, in Madawaska they would have been the only place to buy those products!

You act as though a company that couldn't give any less of a spit about its own employees would actually care about some random customers...ahem, members.

If there is a need for a department store there, and they can make a profit...it'll be replaced soon enough.
