Jewelry - Costco style counter - please enlighten...

I'd like to hear from associates who worked in jewelry dept. when they had the kind of counter that had the island in the center and now have the remodeled counter (Costco style).

They recently transferred a bunch of items to other stores from the stores that were getting the remodeled counter. So, it's coming to ALL clubs, just a matter of when. They are doing it a little bit at a time. It has already occurred in many clubs, so that's who I'd like to hear from.

Was your position eliminated? If so, were you offered the choice of a different position or a severance package?

The new counter is an UN-staffed position (just like Costco - pull a pull tag and take it up front), correct?

If you still work in the club, how is the Costco style counter working out? Who helps the members? Who processes the jewelry that comes in to put it in the display cases? Who takes care of the special orders that come in? The ring sizings that come back? Who does price changes, transfers, RTV's, claims items, sending items out for repair? Who does the audits? Etc, etc The job will still need to be done.

Has your store had the Coscto style counter through the Christmas season last year? If so, how does that work?? There are constantly members all day who want to look, try things on, ask questions, buy items etc. At Christmas we need 2 or 3 people scheduled most days from Black Friday through Christmas. I don't see how an unstaffed counter can work when the clubs are so understaffed on the front end and the floor.

Our club switched to the island style, it was quickly after customers realized how easy it was to overwhelm the associate. Ran out the door with a diamond ring. Sams needs to stop copy cating Costco and have their own way.

First , Sams Club is not a jewelry store, a professional jewelist would not be working at Sams Club. Second , the members know how to play the game. When done with it, damaged, dirty ...... return it. We probably take more back than we sell . So, dont worry when they take it away ........... let the jewelers sell the jewelry and let us sell the chicken ..... no worries

Thanks for the input. It is a terrible decision by our Home Office! They are not in touch with the members likes. I hear several times a week from different members how they shop our jewelry counter BECAUSE they can't stand the jewelry counter at Costco. They don't like the low selection, higher end pieces, and most importantly they dislike NOT having an educated jewelry associate, but just having pull tickets where a lead or manager comes over and can't answer any of their questions. This is where we have a big advantage over Costco, yet they don't care. Sales will drastically decline and member service will suffer...members will be unhappy, as confirmed by your experiences. Getting rid of the handbags is ridiculous. We sell a LOT of handbags! People love the great prices on these brand name bags and they do not sell them online. Way to go H.O. - taking good items away from our members.

Where is jewelry checked in? On top of the countertop that the members shop? Do you only have one of every item? There is no safe for back stock, correct? If that is true, again....more lost sales. Many times I sell multiple units of the same item in one day, and sometimes members will buy more than one of a particular item for gifts. Where are the supplies kept like the boxes, bags and tissue? Where do you do your work of putting the jewelry on the elements? I just don't see how that counter can be functional or safe at all.

Jewelry is a waste of payroll. Only make money a few times a year. Get rid of it

My club got the counter in Aug. 2017. We are still staffed. I’m a TL and I have 1 part time associate. Let me tell you ... Holidays are a nightmare. It’s a very bad set up.. limits the amount of members you can have around the counters looking at the jewelry. My members HATE IT. Scary checking jewelry shipments in. No secure area to do it.. I’ve been in dept for 16 years and everyday I consider retiring because of these counters. I think they will eventually be unmanned.. when is the question I could go on and on but I think you get the picture. Good Luck if it’s coming your way. It’s horrible!!

My club has had this for a little over a year. Still one jewelry associate, which is what we originally had just one, and the jewelry counter is not pull tags. We still have our associate working & other associates trained to be able to show jewelry and make the sale. Sales did hurt with loss of hand bags. Not sure what will come once all clubs in market get counter, but you truly benefit from a trained jewelry associate in my opinion so losing that would be non beneficial to members.
