They are cutting contractors and redistributing work to the employees and either moving that work they were doing before or stop doing it all together. At least that is what I've seen.

You guys miss the big picture this is all about $$$. A salaried and benefit person cost too much contractors cheap. Thus is all about Wall Street stock jump. Ownership by internal employees is not and never be valued again. Read hunter Harrison’s biography , 38% of Union Pacific expense is salary and benefits followed by fuel 17%

Guess what is the easiest to drive shareholder value right size the mothership which has 21,000 employees so bottom line everyone must add value or will be shown the door . Unified precision is a two yr process and a lot of blood letting along the way

The only excuse for a bad contractor at UP is a bad manager at UP. I have had maybe 100 contractors work for me over the many years and I've let go a whole bunch within the first 30-60 days because they are not good (on and offshore) I've also done thorough skills assessments before taking them on to mitigate the risks. I'll tell you I've got a list of 10-15 contractors that I would GLADLY take with me on any project because they are just so good....and UP IT execs refused to hire them opting instead for some college new hire that can't spell IT and quits because it was just too hard for them to get to work everyday. (I've had great college hires too).

But...just wait and see. we'll be saying goodbye to many many many contractors in the coming weeks. that has been promised for over a year and now it is coming to reality.

Some are good, some are bad. What they all lack is the sense of ownership, they all come in and they do not feel Union Pacific is something that needs to be taken care off, they do not think about the customer, etc. The employee has a different approach – they know they will be here a while and they should better take care of things. On the other hand I’ve seen a ton of employees who are lax in their approach, take long lunches, have sloppy code, etc. So, I guess there are bad apples on both sides. I’ve been an employee since 2014.

Good luck during the layoff – we know it’s coming.
