Thread regarding IBM layoffs

What can be done?

Things have been going downhill for us for a while, with one bad decision after another. Anybody else feeling like we are finally past the point of no return?

IBM can save money in several ways, but they just refuse to do so.

Sears was the same way. Both dinosaurs who refuse to embrace the future.

Nothing. This tragic play is in its final act. The IBM of the near future will be a much smaller version of itself and will never be the powerhouse it once was. They'll make monies suing any organization that comes close to their vast array of patents; such as inventing the internet, analytics, cloud, etc. ... LoL ... Why would any company spend money with this organization is beyond my comprehension.

Incompetent management but which is exceptionally skilled at misdirection. They pay for specialists to sprinkle counter-arguments like an earlier one in this page.

The rest of the points are in line with countless others that point the finger of blame at a geriatric management that is so distanced from technical innovation they could be living on another planet. The primary reason they lasted this long is that "value" mutual-funds depend on the steady dividend payments. A secondary reason is political correctness - Ginni is a woman so needs more time. Both reasons are porous and will backfire very soon - laying off talent is s---c-dal; and Ginni will retire with a massive compensation package well before the music dies.

An alternative is to run a referendum to take IBM back, with further oversight of employees to keep the "establishment" in check - no more rogue managers. A critical mass of requests will encourage admins to set up a poll and turn anger into productive action.

For those who care: the highly touted "Watson Analytics" was quietly disbanded this year. The combination of SPSS, Watson AI and Business Analytics in one unbeatable package. It didn't work.

Watson Health executives used to brag they were going to put 10,000 radiologists out of business. Who is laughing now?

I agree with fdioei1 as I left 6 months ago and since then the exodus has been notable. Anyone with any self-esteem left and is employable is or should be looking for a move. The treatment of loyal, talented and very hard working people is nothing short of disgusting. Roles, if backfilled are being sourced in Poland and the remaining people are being pushed to breaking point. But hey .. they have those great badges to aspire to eh ?

From a personal perspective here in the UK, 2016 was a pivotal year given the very notable increase in genuinely talented people being laid-off, compounded by a significant number opting to leave of their own accord thereafter. The misery, angst and paranoia in this place now is palpable and there is absolutely no confidence in the management.

Watson was a bet and it did not pan out. A lost decade...

Not just IBM. This same storyline is playing out at hundreds of major corporations in America and the world.

The point of no return was passed back when the geniuses decided to throw all hope behind Watson and then engaged in marketing blitz after marketing blitz about how great Watson is and how it'll cure cancer/make the planet smarter/write songs/blah/blah/blah... and named one one-off project after another Watson this and Watson that. Fortunately customers are stupid so the bs worked for a while. After all who would suspect the great IBM of deception. But sooner or later customers aren't so stupid.
