Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Before the inevitable let's put in a few good words abt how Sears helped you?

To be truthful I did feel sorrow with the thought that Sears may finally liquidate. Enjoyed my time at Sears. They provided employment. Well it seems like its time to move on now. Even humans have to die someday. Nothing lasts forever on this earth.

@3ehh That is great. Thanks for sharing, you and @xti. We all (except the cheerleader) know it s---s nowadays, but it's nice to hear how good Sears used to be, on a personal level.

It's hard to say good things about SHC now. But this is what Sears Roebuck meant to me, back in the day:

I worked part time for Sears in high school. Back then, my store was staffed with mostly full time retail pros who knew every inch of the store. As a teenager, I was definitely a second stringer compared to those folks. My manager kept me on because I was happy to work weekends. I got time and a half on Sundays and banked every cent I could. My Sears earnings were the cornerstone of my college savings. When I graduated, my co-workers threw me a party--on company time, no less, with the DM's support and attendance. I am grateful to have been part of the "real" Sears.

It was my first job. I loved my coworkers and managers until I stopped giving s*** about credit. I stopped pushing it on customers. I dont regret any of it. I made good friends..I met the love of my life. It paid my bills while I was in college.

My high school job became my first career for a total of 30 years . As the years went by, I began to notice the trend that older workers weren't valued, and were targeted. After years of searching and planning , to the shock of many , I left the company.

I warned the rest of my business unit that things would not end well for them. It didn't . And here we are. Had I stayed , I would t have Jack-sh-t instead of the grand retirement I was promised as a younger man.

Only spent 2 years there in Home Services...hiring manager said they wanted fresh ideas and thought I could make a difference in changing the mindset. He was fired 2 months after I was hired. Found out real quick as a manager you did not question the way things were done. They didn't want anything fresh or a new perspective...just do what you are told. I began interviewing right away until I found a career and corporation that actually wanted fresh ideas and to challenge upper management. Glad I left when I did...what a horribly ran company. It is no wonder it has went down so far, so fast.

Sorry, wish I did have something good to say about the company. I do feel sorry for the great people I managed while I was there. Very, very good people that stood behind me when I fought for them.

@xti - after all the news since 15 Oct, I felt happy to read your experience. Some people are bitter. What I have learnt if you are a good person, especially if the head of the family is a good person inspire of difficulties/ bad tidings eventually good comes around. Wish you all the goodness and blessings this life has to offer.

i will always have a soft spot for Sears. My dad worked at Sears, part-time in the credit department from 1960 until he died from lung cancer in 1979. When my mother attempted to collect from a life insurance policy my dad had thru Sears, she was told by the insurance company that my dad not qualify for the full benefit because he hadn't worked enough hours or something along that line, for mom to collect. My mom and I went down to the store where my dad had worked to see if there was something the Store Manager or Head of Personnel could do.. My mom talked to both the the Store Manager and Head of Personnel and explained the situation. After hearing her story, the Head of Personnel, with a big smile on her face and said to follower her to another office. She pulled out my dad's personnel file and "corrected" the number of hours he worked so my mom could collect on the policy. My mother and I were flabbergasted! they didn't have to do that. When my mother thanked everyone, their response was " we all loved Joe ( my dad ) he was part of the family" Back in those days, many of the employee's were "lifers" who started working for Sears after the war ( in the same store ) and retired after 30-40 years with a good pension. I worked 5 year for Sears as a part-time employee until our store was closed in 2012. I'm very proud to have been a part of the Hero's at Home project and I'm also extremely sad to see an American Icon go down the sh--ter.

After 36 years.....my first and last job, I was "asked" to take early retirement a year ago. I was told if I didn't I would risk being fired and having things made "very unpleasant" They also threatened the pension which I earned the right to.

It used to be a great company. Now it needs to die.

Not much nice to say after the way we parted ways. Sears is being run by evil, evil people.
