Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Crime

Pride aside, it should almost be a criminal offense to destroy a great company like this.

To the “that’s what capitalism is” person, the difference is that this is not smart business. While studying for my MBA, a key class was dedicated to business ethics, and working toward improving a triple bottom line. These decisions are not making the company more competitive. This is nothing more corporate gutting for the immediate benefit of activist investors and the executive elites. It is short sighted corporate greed and not far off from what has killed off many great corporations over the last decade. The few at the top will walk away enriched, while those left to clean up the ashes will suffer the consequences of the irresponsible decisions of those who are wrecking the company. We are all going to suffer if the rail industry is re-regulated, and the effects of the recent decisions from the top will be begging for regulation in short order.

Bingo...You are correct in saying "because every company will gut you as soon as it benefits them." Pretty much sums it up indeed.

I hate to say it, but it’s always been this way, that’s what capitalism is. It’s never been about the workers or their families and it’s all designed around the owners of the company. Businesses are always looking at how to maximize profits, the best way to do that, cut unnecessary work and look for innovative way of doing things. UP is just very late to the game. Remember, UP owes you nothing, they pay you to do a job, once you’re done, you can leave. Also remember, no matter where you go, you’re replaceable. No one person in any job isn’t replaceable. CEOs are fired all the time, and that’s the highest position in a company. Bottom line, trust no one at any job, because every company will gut you as soon as it benefits them.

Generations of railroad employees just thrown out like garbage. The sacrifices we all have made over the years from travel to working ridiculous amounts of hours to make sure we get the job done! Missing school activities, kids games, family vacations that had to be canceled due to work, or even losing your family because you spent more time at work then at home. CEO says that is "our choice". Really?! Being a dedicated employee, going the extra mile to make sure things are done correctly does not mean a thing in today's railroad. We are all just an number. Why would anyone in this world want their children or grandchildren to work for a company that treats employees this poor. Giving you 24 hours to decide the rest of your life or just being escorted off the property in front of your peers!!
