Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

What are your reasons for not taking the package?

Looks like most of the people I've talked to simply don't feel like looking for a new job with only two or three years left before retirement (which I believe is a major risk, and they could end up being laid off anyhow with significantly lower severance to show for it.)

Is this the main reason for most people?

If they gave 3 weeks severance with unlimited weeks so people with 30 plus can possibly make it to retirement more people would leave. There are a lot of people with 25 - 30 years trying to make to retirement or at least age 62.

My reason for not taking the package is based on my situation, you have to assess your life.

These are the kind of posts that make one think HR is trying to drum up business.

I'm taking the package.. but I believe there are a few reason some folks are NOT taking it. 1 They believe once many folks are gone there will be room for advancement in the company. 2. They have a family and don't believe they have skills outside of VZ that will get them the pay/benefits they are currently receiving. 3. They continue to hear why would you leave here with all the vacation and money you are making.. so similar to #2 FEAR. 4. They have not been with VZ long (those like 6 years in) saying why XX # of weeks is not enough to leave.

The post 60 week cost of medical insurance is to high to leave if you have a family and no alternative spousal plan in place. If they enhanced the medical benefit more people would go. Not totally the company's fault, but they could make this better.

The fear of starting over and the work that goes into it, I believe is what is holding a lot of people back.

To me if you only have 2 years left to retirement then taking the package makes sense. With the package you are paid with benefits for 14 months vs. working for 24 months but I guess I can see your point. Maybe in 2 years when ready to retire they will have and you will get the regular package.

I am going to Infosys. Not enough time to 100% ensure I have a job.

1 in the hand, is worth 2 in the bush.

6 months down the line, I will re-evaluate.
