Next 1 Man train crews. It's coming.

I will strongly recommend that anyone with the UP to leave, or start thinking about it! It's going to get far worse, than it is now! Please dont say that conductors are useless! Who's the ones watching the shoves? Whos the one that laces up the cars? Who's usually the one calling for track warrants? Who's the one that walks the train during an undesired emergency? Conductors have a lot more work than what is being mentioned! They're also the ones that are out in the elements during switching moves! Yeah I'm sure there's some conductors that are useless, but why go after "90%" of them! When you're on call 24/7 and constantly traveling, they deserve a nap! I'd be tired and b--chy too! I've also seen the size of a lot of engineers, and witnessed exactly how much they complain too! Dont attack the conductors! That's not fair to them! Of course nothing is fair at the UP, so really everyone has a right to b--ch!

I honestly believe it will be before the next contract. I'm already preparing and looking for another career. You have to be pretty uneducated and ignorant to not see that not only are we conductors not needed 90% of the time no one can help or prepare you for the future.

10 years? Engineers have done it all because they were conductors too. Again it doesn't matter what conductors, engineers, union reps think of believe as the UP will decide when. Again, it's coming and will happen quickly.

One man crews are definitely coming. Hopefully 10 years down the line. It’s hard to read that there is no brotherhood left in the cab. It must be a main line thing up north. I’ve worked in Livonia, Houston, Dalhart and Denver. Some of the best crews in the system. In Houston and Denver those crews do a lot of work en route between terminals. To those engineers who think they are the backbone of the railroad, I’ve never seen you get out of the cab and change a knuckle you broke, nor have i seen you build your train, do your double overs in the yard and etc. It takes a crew to get a train over the road. If you have a sleeper with you, we as brothers should deal with him within our ranks. Why put it on a public forum? But if it’s a lot of guys, you might wanna look in the mirror. They may be ignoring you and would rather look out the side window than deal with you.

Yes,1 man crews are going to happen in the very near future. They're cutting VPs, directors, managers at all levels, clerks and many more. The Ups #1 priority, biggest expense, largest liability is conductors. They're fighting tooth and nail to eliminate that liability and now that the GOP controls everything the UP will do what they want and when they want to do it. You are receiving warning calls now. Prepare. P.s. I'm writing this from Omaha.

I can see one man crews in the near future but the thought of having no one in the cab I really do not see the happening.

The BLET is dying to pay them back for the RCL agreement the UTUE signed that as we speak is almost dead and gone. Facts are conductors need to prepare for what's coming. 1 Man Crews and no RCLs.

Are you sure it'll be an engineer in the cab...considering a remote box is the only thing you need to put a train back together when it breaks...who has that contract....who makes more on a trip rate...wouldnt it make more sense to eliminate engineers since all they do is press an an alerter button. PTC can blow the horn for you too.

The company can't keep the stuff they have working, much less an automated train. Do you know how many times a week PTC doesn't work? More times than it does. You're high if you think the govt is going to let hazmat roll through towns automated. There won't be anyone to blame when something goes wrong and there HAS to be someone to blame, the company won't take that liability when they have a train crew to take it for them.

Since all we do is sit over there and complain, sleep, eat and complain more we're really not needed and I see it. They will really cut the force when they do that.

There are literally hundreds of people (at UP alone, nevemind other roads, wabtec and GE) working on ways to get rid of bodies on the ground. Most of these jobs will not exist in 10-15 years. Those that do will exist at greatly reduced compensation because they will be made much simpler and easier. Deny it all you and say it will never happen. It will, that is fact. Look at your kids video games and then say they can’t do something with railroad operations.
