If you are put on a PIP take the option of leaving and go. There is no coming back from a PIP. Despite the other posters claims PIPs are a nightmare for managers to I initiate. In 15+ years as a manager in Cisco I got approval for 2 and delivered only one. (one person resigned before I could deliver it to him. He literally turned down my offer to give him the doc, let him sign it and walk away with free money)

To put someone on a PIP, you have to show HR written proof that someone is both underperforming on specific measurable items, and that this has been communicated to the person in writing. Each PIP process I initiated to 3+ months before HR was satisfied.

If you’ve been offered one, work the system. Take the maximum time to consider if you want to accept. It will have specific items that are spelled out as to what you need to do. Even though you have not accepted the PIP yet, do those items. Send an e-mail to your manager indicating that even though you have not accepted the PIP that you believe you have completed the identified task. Literally cut and paste the item from the doc, and identify what you did that you think meets the requirement and ask for confirmation or clarification about why what you did doesn’t meet the requirement. Do this often. Daily if possible.

Then on the last day to accept or when you have another job and you are ready to leave reject the PIP and take the money.

Never agree for PIP. Ask if some package exist and leave. Your manager is inefficient as he is unable to defend his team. PIP will cause you depression. Normally managers in Bangalore who are inefficient take this to save their seat by punishing their reporters.

A PIP probably has nothing to do with you or your performance. It’s someone higher up who is threatened by you. There’s no reason for PIPs these days. Everyone can be coached, it’s someone being lazy and not taking the time to do their job as a manager. Cisco used to be a great place to work but isn’t anymore. It’s like having a government role on your resume.

Do not try to beat a PIP. Take the package when offered the choice. If you fail at the PIP, you are fired with no severance. And no unemployment benefits, because you were fired. Just take the package and move on with life.

If you have never had a performance review previously how can you be put on a PIP? Ask that of HR and get another year. Buys some breathing space

It's role independent. Typically runs for 4-8 weeks.
