Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Long Tenure

AS various outplacement people explained: With a long tenure at a place like VZ, you end up earning above your true market value (this is on average of course, individuals will vary). If training has kept your skills up to date, you MAY be able to argue nearer the market, but it all depends on presentation.

As a made up IT example, if my day-to-day work has really been on legacy mainframes, but I've got AWS certifications via training, an employer may well still prefer some 25 year old who has been using AWS at a job for two years. You have to communicate that your overall experience is going to provide extra value to a new employer. And sadly, sometimes it really won't!

1uvy is right on the money. But, accountants putting numbers down in a spreadsheet don't have any quantifiable method to value this so they just don't.

Here is what those mo--n “outplacement people do not understand; the whole concept of market value in the simple terms they see it is a joke.

Every industry, every company, is filled with nuance; things that make it unique next to anyone else. I would argue that the telecom industry is more nuanced then most. The value in a tenured employee is not only in skill set; I’d argue that what’s more important is the ability to wade through a company’s nuance. That is where the real value lies and that can only be acquired through time and experience. Leadership apoarently doesn’t get this or doesn’t care. An eye towards doing their best to their customer doesn’t matter anymore.
