Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

Open letter to JohnV

JohnV

Many times you have expressed your desire to make Xerox a "technology powerhouse". That would be great!

We have so much talent at Xerox, and always have been. For decades, engineers and researchers have invented so many things that we take for granted. The personal computer. The graphical user interface. Interpress, the precursor to postscript. The Ethernet. Object oriented programming. The optical mouse. So many others. Oh, and the laser printer.

Sadly, we failed to capitalize on what our people built. That was a failure on the engineers to truly see what they had, and a bigger failure on management for not knowing how to make money on it.

With these very successful failures, we continued. We entered the era of digital printing with Docutech in the '80s and made billions. We got into the insurance market (really.) We built small desktop printers for the SOHO market. We built office A3 and A4 printers for every office in America. We built iGen and family for graphics printing. We continued our mono products for hi-volume transactional printing. We experimented with continuous feed, solid ink, direct to object printing.

But we lost our way. We no longer manufactured our own A3 and A4 engines. We slowly evolved the iGen and production products. We lost hundreds of millions with our investment in solid ink. We tried to buy our way into the inkjet market with Impika.

We reformed our relationship with Fuji. Then did it again. Then who the hell knows where we are now, and if we have any relationship with Fuji or another IOT manufacturer.

People are confused. People are saddened to see us spinning with no clear direction.

Yet we still have good people. Great people. We can build anything. Anything. We can continue with the printing business, or take our product development knowledge and go into a completely different market.

But we'll fail. We are going to lose people, our best people. Our latest benefits packages makes it clear that senior management does not value our people. Senior management gets many millions of dollars in incentives, while our people continue to lose in what is supposed to be a good economy.

Our young talent is already looking for their next gig. They have no loyalty to Xerox as Xerox has shown no loyalty to them. They see every dollar in benefits cuts as a dollar lost in salary. They see us flailing not knowing who are are, and can't see themselves investing their energy into building a career here.

Our mid career people are updating resumes. They have been at Xerox for most of their careers and want to remain here, but want to get out while they can, as management has not shown us they have any real long term plan for the company.

Our long time seasoned people still feel loyalty, but are probably mostly hanging on until they get a package. It's not worth their effort to look for another job, and they stay here because it's all they've known for decades, and have many fond memories from better days.

JohnV, you and the senior management team are going to kill this company. First, we've been screwing around for months after the failed Fuji takeover. You talk about being a "technology powerhouse" but to do so requires people: keeping the people we have, and attracting young people. The benefits cut is a neon sign saying "Get Out!"

Want a tech power house? Here's how you do it.

  • don't cut health benefits

  • value your people

  • set a clear direction for the company

  • resolves the Fuji and/or new partner relationship

  • invest yourself in the company; pull a Steve Jobs and give up your salary for a share of a success

  • stop with the layoffs. Every. Single. Week. If you have to consolidate, do it all at once and call it done. Dragging it on is terrible for morale.

We've always been able to build the best products. In 3-4 months, when people leave for greener pastures, we won't even be able to support and sell the products we have.

Unfortunately, all you have predicted has come to past. Jobs in Canada and the US are all but gutted and offshored.

Yes please stop the layoffs every single week. We all work together and yes we know when there USA layoffon delivery, service, sales, engineering, marketing, contract labor not renewed, jobs outsourced, jobs transitioned to other geographic locations, Yada, yada, yada. This has been going on yearly, then 2 times a year, then more frequently since 1995. Your getting paid big bucks (anywhere from 50x to 100x the salary of many employees) Just get it done already.

As John V is learning - they're going to regret stopping the Fuji-Xerox deal.

In this last year I have seen Xerox get rid of a lot of good people, Management and Union. Some that deserved to get letgo but most that didn't. In this time I have seen so many people decide to Retire, people with alot of knowledge, people that no longer have faith in Xerox, people that left when they were ready not when our new upper management team decided! On this last layoff they went for money, with money came alot of knowledge, we lost some good people. So why is it Upper Management (John V. and his team) keeps growing with people that are all new to the company and making good money? I know it takes more than Upper Management to make a successful company.

I also wrote a 'Jerry McGuire' memo to JohnV. It was on a Saturday. I was shocked he replied. I was asked to interface with some woman. Her admin reached out to me to set a meeting. I eventually refused. I didn't want to talk to her. I don't know her, heck, I don't know him.

I do know Xerox people. I remember how much I have and still love Xerox. I love what we do as technicians. I don't know how I can replace that feeling of coming to work and loving what I do.

So, we all have a choice; leave or stay and make it better. I'm staying...

The only reason we "We lost hundreds of millions with our investment in solid ink" is because solid ink has always had to carry printhead. Any profit made by solid ink is negated by the big losses suffered by printheads.

I know someone who responded to John V's request for employee input and was also let go. Rumor has it that JV disagreed vehemently with the employee's suggestion and demanded he be fired because of it.

JohnV sent an email out encouraging employees to share their ideas on how to make Xerox great again (not in those exact words). I was so excited I sent an email concerning my area and the lack of focus received and how It generated revenue for the company. JohnV responded with a thank you and copy in the COO. I was so excited that JohnV responded and thought there was hope for the program. On Oct 30, 2018 JohnV, Steve B and Xerox laid me off. Moral of story "don't waste your time trying to save this company, they don't care!".

John V doesn't care about you. He doesn't care about this company.

That said, I couldn't agree more with your letter, especially concerning new employees.

I am one of those who left Xerox after just a couple of years. I liked my boss, I LOVED the work, and my coworkers were the best. But I just couldn't see a career in a company like that; the upper level management just seemed so disconnected it was almost like a dream. Watching the webcasts made me want to ask if any of the people had been to Webster recently. The only one I had any respect for after my time there was Hoover, who cared enough about his work to move to Rochester to have his office near the labs.

Why is the CSCO not in Webster? Why have even mid-tier managers never talked to him? Same for the CIO - work with your people. Remote management doesn't work; you're not going to win my allegiance by sending down memos from your glass tower in the shadow of nyc, hundreds of miles away. Show up. Prove you care.

OP - JohnV knows exactly what he's doing and he will make bank. And you? What is your plan for you?

While I appreciate this, I have to question anyone who thinks that JohnV is in for anything other than a gut and sale. If you still buy the “tech powerhouse” line, you’re not living in the 2018 Wall Street world.

I think the best case scenario is that it’s fast and someone can reignite an ember from the bonfire left after the Icahn era. If they even leave us with anything.
