Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Corporations have the free hand to pay their employees as little as they want.

This is a very interesting observation but I believe that it goes beyond just VZ and even other companies. It's an issue with the way that corporations have been given free hand to pay employees as much or as little as they want. As an example a poll showed that average CEO raise last year was 16%, but me personally got 1%, and I assure you that it was not performance related. Not even 3-4% that used to be the norm. Vz saved millions in tax breaks that it received from government and as it was announced last year, Vz chose to let go of 10% of its employees. And I still got a raise that was below the country inflation rate. When people talk about middle class being squeezed that is exactly what it means. My base salary is the same as what I made in 2001 when I was with another country. So if you wonder why people have to take loans of all kinds and owe tens of thousands in debt that's why. If you are a sole provider for your family, you are screwed. A family needs two incomes to be able to be debt free, and those incomes better be 100K plus.

So, the whole concept of trickle down economy is the biggest bull c-ap that has been shoved down our throat. There is nothing that ever trickles down the hands of a wealthy person or a financially sound company. Don't forget, people don't get rich by spending and remember that.

Look at GM, reports $2.5B in last quarter profits, they got the tax break, they got TARP to save them from bankruptcy and to keep American jobs but what do they turn around and do, nothing trickles down?

Lastly, atl least GM has the balls to say how many they are slashing, Vz is weaseling out of that that too... Vz and weasel they actually rhyme:

The OP ( @VV7Jm9s-1efk ) made a good point and underlined a huge injustice which the workers have to face every day. Great post!

Wow. "The Poor performers get 1% a year. I have averaged about 3.5%." At Verizon, that type of increase may be awarded if you are NOT at top pay.

Try this on for size. Excellent performer for many years. Reach top pay. NO ROOM for any increase. Only hope is for 'market' to be re-evaluated and top pay raised. Surprise. Market is evaluated and Vz decides to reduce top pay. Now, the hard working, excellent performing employee is "Exceeding Market" and will never receive another pay increase.

THAT is actually how it works.

Only a socialist would ask for a 16% raise just like the CEOs. A good capitalist should be happy for the 3% raise he was given and not finch on worshiping the CEOs and the owners. A good capitalist would also supply his wives and daughters for the CEOs entertainment.

Companies should pay what they like...it is called a free market economy. Dont like it? Go to another company, upgrade your skills and/or value to the company, or go to China. BTW, I never got a job from a poor man.

good performance for over 20 years, solid raises of 3-6% every year....now a target due to tenure and wages expense. Vicious cycle.

The Right has been shoving trickle down economics down the throat of their brainwashed base for so long. They're convinced that anything else is socialism.

Hummm, sounds like a push for socialism to me. You want everyone to make the same salary regardless of what they do? I don't disagree that some CEOs make ridiculous amounts of money, but those are contracts approved, rightly or wrongly, by the respective board of directors. Likewise, many professional sports athletes make more money than CEOs.
