Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Resource Action 2019

Not my thread I just recycled 2018 post... You can see i there @OLbfSBK

I will be the first one to start it – let’s talk about IBM Resource Action for 2019. I know that there are some rumors already floating around, but let’s consolidate things in this thread. In short I’d like to address the following:

  • Timing of Resource Actions – are we going to see quarterly boosts throughout 2019?

Size of layoffs – are we going to exceed, in size, 2018 layoffs – should we brace for a mega cut?

Geographies – where will 2019 layoffs going to be concentrated? East? West? US vs other geographies?

Verticals – What groups will be hit the most as it relates to the upcoming resource actions?

That’s all that comes to mind right now – I am sure I am omitting some other important stuff but that’s what I have right now…

Thoughts?

Service will be sold to DHL who is doing the logistics. No severance pay . Head counts are being totaled as we speak. Another round.

Consider a class action lawsuit for age discrimination everyone. It’s very true. All my employees over 45 were ‘selected” for RA’s. With an RA, it isnt considered a Layoff, so different laws. Don’s sign or no legal anything.

I have it on very good authority that the Digital Business Group (DBG) is only getting started with their co-location plans. Security was the first.

If you are working for one of the teams under DBG and aren’t located in whatever center is the home of your brand (Atlanta, Dallas, Raleigh, Markham etc.), your days are numbered. If you are in the same country as your major center, you will be asked to move to keep your job. Otherwise, you will be let go outright with the usual package.

Been with the company for 14 years. Always great reviews (but no raises of course), 48 yrs old and got RA'd with the standard 3 months 1 month sev. Told we can look within IBM but was also told there's a hiring freeze for everyone that got RA'd. How this can be legal and so heartless is beyond me. Ginny is old, let's get rid of her.

Has anyone had any information if you secure an new job outside of IBM before the end of the 90 days? Can you just stay on and collect the check and severance until 10/31?

Similar to above - was told my job and the work o do is going away and to spend the next 90 days training my replacement. Whatever!

The entire Canadian Security Sales team has been RA'd in both Fredericton and Ottawa. Digital Sales finally has their wish of having all Commercial Security Sales positions in Atlanta.

This has been coming for about 2 years as they progressively made things difficult and c-appy enough to lose people by attrition, but lied about by management especially the BUE. They seemed content to play games and blow smoke... the deed today was done under the guise of a Career Discussion.

Here's the discussion.... "you no longer have a career..."

IBM Canada in Security. BUE coming from US for 1on 1 meetings tomorrow. In-country Manager also rumoured to be coming.

Consensus is that entire remaining team (that hasn’t already quit over the past year) will be RA’d.

At 54 just got RA'd after 7 years and a top performer in Columbia, MO. Last day is 10/31/19. Haven't had a raise since 2014 and had lost my seat last year. I was selected for the new IBM Academy retraining in July 2018, passed all the classes and no one from Costa Rica helped in finding me another seat, which was their job. It took from 7/18 until 3/19 for anyone of them to offer to help. Then they just shuffled me out on 8/1/19.

I joined IBM in 07/2017 after IBM bought part of Verizon. I was let go in June. Given 3 months to look for another job and one month severance. I can honesty say that in 2 years I have never done a second of work. Not a single second. I have never been contacted by a manager or another co-worker. It's like I never existed at IBM. I have over 10 years of cloud experience. I have applied to several cloud position. Never heard back from one of them. They can get people for half of what I get paid so why would they hire.

I was laid off in June. I have only been with IBM since 2010 but was with a company they acquired since 1984. I am 67 years old and have always gotten excellent reviews. I have not been asked to sign an agreement yet for my one-month severance. When should I expect it? I suspect that at least many of the layoffs are age related, though IBM would surely say otherwise. Wish I could establish that my layoff was age related because them I could sue for age bias. Not sure I can prove that though.

I'm getting axed in September, after 29 years.. Seriously considering forgoing the ONE MONTH severance, and filing an age discrimination suit. Any suggestions for an appropriate attorney?

I am based in Singapore and despite hitting my numbers for the past 6 quarters in a row just got RA'd. All the Asian regional solution specialists are being taken out as they are considered 'overlay' sales people. Driving sales in emerging technologies without folks that know what they are talking about isn't going to be easy - I suspect that more heads will roll in 6 months time......

We should get together and find an attorney. Almost 40 years of service with a multimillion dollar deal pending, and I was told to find another role or go. There’s a theme here! DON’T SIGN!

@VZzqzzM-3Fyxj - As you will discover, the HR person you will speak with will be a very young phone rep in the Philippines. I've already tried that. You won't get any information out of them that you can't easily find on W3.

It's a sad situation that such an old, and formerly respected company has outsourced its soul (and any task it can) to somewhere else. I fully expected to be connected to a knowledgeable person somewhere in NY .. but not the case.

We are of little to no importance to them anymore, even before the cuts. And after being RA'd, completely none.

@VZzqzzM-3wusu

With the actions currently occurring, it is not a matter of business as usual; nor is it restructuring for individual performance or skill alignment.

IBM has already restructured for cloud and for cognitive and the business model failed because IBM failed to invest in it's own technology and failed to listen or pay attention to market demands for cloud consumption models. This is a cost reduction to make a returns target and it will continue quarter on quarter because there is no internal or public strategy that re-positions IBM's go-to-market strategy for any of it's key focus areas to improve returns. Redhat is not enough.

Even with this current RA, Planning more RAs for upcoming quarter- Now just focused on US employees. Off shore is off limits.

I'm meeting with an employment attorney on Monday to discuss whether or not to accept the separation, which requires that I waive all possible claims against IBM. I'm 61, and this thread has made me wonder whether age factored into their decision. I'm going to show him what has been said here, so any and all other information regarding possible age discrimination in these layoffs would be helpful.

Got laid off in february along with others from a buyout. All over 40 by the way. The only 2 that stayed were under 40. The onboarding team stressed how honored we should be to be ibmers now. Lol, maybe 30 years ago bub. Your name means sh-- these days. Millennials have never heard of ya and their kids will read about u in a history book some day because u built a super computer a hundred years ago. All u are now is super stupid. Didn't take me long to realize IBM is all smoke and mirrors. I was profoundly amazed that all the tech and software at the oldest IT company around was total garbage and cumbersome. Amazes me how the jokers on Wall St keep buying this sh--. What a joke.
