Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Resource Action 2019

Not my thread I just recycled 2018 post... You can see i there @OLbfSBK

I will be the first one to start it – let’s talk about IBM Resource Action for 2019. I know that there are some rumors already floating around, but let’s consolidate things in this thread. In short I’d like to address the following:

  • Timing of Resource Actions – are we going to see quarterly boosts throughout 2019?

Size of layoffs – are we going to exceed, in size, 2018 layoffs – should we brace for a mega cut?

Geographies – where will 2019 layoffs going to be concentrated? East? West? US vs other geographies?

Verticals – What groups will be hit the most as it relates to the upcoming resource actions?

That’s all that comes to mind right now – I am sure I am omitting some other important stuff but that’s what I have right now…

Thoughts?

So far no good. Last Monday we got informed that IBM has to let go a big part of us here in Norway.

June 3 we get more details. But it looks like this is going to be a big one. Lets see how many managers get hit by this. Most likely 0 to none. And the local unions follow IBM like sheep to the butcher.

Layoffs are coming. IBM needs to get rid of the baby sitters it still has. Management must be trimmed also, still top heavy.

You misread my email, I said I believed individuals well into their 60’s should have a retirement plan/discussion with their employer. In the consulting market many of ibms competitors have an “up or out” career model and mandatory retirement ages for its executives between 58-62.... By late 50s most executive professionals at other firms are nearing their last client assignment and mentoring the next generation. Unfortunately Ibm lacks a culture of mentorship and turning over roles to the next generation., because the same people want to hang on for too long. Also I’m not independently wealthy, but have been thoughtful and well prepared for retirement, well in advance of 60....

So if you’re thinking everyone in consulting services 60 and above should be laid off or retired you or it “breaks HR “ You have real delusions about the purpose of HR and age discrimination laws. Perhaps the author is independently wealthy and doesn’t suffer the same 401(k), insurance and Social Security benefit issues of the rest of the US public.

23 year at IBM, I was not asked if I want "early retirement", I was RAed in Feb 2019, AKA forced into an "early retirement", no one asked.

Do you really think it’s unreasonable for IBM to suggest retirement at 63? The consulting/services model doesn’t work if employees stay well into their 60’s, you have to be able to move the next generation up or your overall HR model fails

Lenovo has pulled out because service division does not have enough people to repair laptops, desktops and keep up with logo business. It is insane that customers pay for a premium service and wait weeks to get it due to layoffs and the shifting of experienced workers to other divisions. All this why they hire labor at ridiculous low salaries to replace legacy workers who have a wealth of product knowledge. The future of service of IBM HW is in peril as most legacy people are in 50-60’s with 30+ years of service. Customers are being lied to and cheated out of money on service contracts they cannot honor because of lack of technicians.

Now that IBM sank 34 billion into Red Hat , you can bet massive layoffs in service. Also when Lenovo pulled out ,this took about 70 percent of the business volumes.

Management will also be hit heavily, low hanging expensive fruit that is prime for picking. Most of the people left are managers and high end staff. The managers have no clue how to run things since many of the worker bees are gone , and IBM wonders why they are not making money. Clueless.

No doubt IBM will get bought at some point. Just wait until the stock goes under $100 (we are getting closer to it every year) then anything is possible... including Amazon buying IBM!

It’s coming sooner rather than later. Rumor mill says they want everything done by end of 2019. Given that spinoff’s / mergers happen over 7-10 month time frames, you can back into a number as far as how soon this will occur. Here is yet one other crazy rumor flying on Wall Street. Once IBM slims down and gets rid of the “overhead”. Google may buy IBM just like IBM bought Redhat to muscle into the Enterprise market. (Rumor says it’s a stock swap, and IBM will Be kept as a separate division).
