Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Why the Oracle Cloud Doesn't really exist...

Quote from LE:

The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we've redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do. I can't think of anything that isn't cloud computing with all of these announcements. The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women's fashion. Maybe I'm an id--t, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It's complete gibberish. It's insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?

"We'll make cloud computing announcements. I'm not going to fight this thing. But I don't understand what we would do differently in the light of cloud."

Anti cloud – but here’s our product

If this quote alone wasn’t good enough, Ellison then went on to say at the same conference, that Oracle would start selling cloud services.

"We’ll make cloud computing announcements because, you know, if orange is the new pink, we’ll make orange blouses. I mean, I’m not gonna fight this thing … well, maybe we’ll do an ad. Uh, I don’t understand what we would do differently in the light of cloud computing, other than market … you know, change the wording on some of our ads."

It was my idea!

Despite his previous claims that cloud was ‘idiocy’, he would later go on to claim that it was actually his idea.

"I started NetSuite. NetSuite was my idea. I called up Evan Goldberg and said, ‘We’re going to do ERP on the Internet, software-as-a-service.’ Six months later Marc Benioff, finding out what NetSuite was doing, and kind of copied it."

Cloud’s great.

At the launch of Oracle cloud, Ellison would even state that he now likes the name.

"I like the words [cloud computing]. It’s a charismatic brand. And people do need to simplify their existing data centers and deliver services in simpler ways."

We run everything important in cloud.

And in 2014, Ellison is eager to state that Oracle is bossing the cloud service market, while also having a dig at SAP.

"Virtually every important cloud service on the planet earth runs on the Oracle database."

"There’s only one that doesn’t – it’s Workday."

"Salesforce runs on Oracle. SAP Hana powers the cloud? I’m going to try and be nice, but it’s so hard."

"Whose cloud are they talking about? I have no idea what runs and how, but it ain’t their cloud – it runs on Oracle."

"It’s rude, but it’s the truth. It’s kind of funny."

If its not clear, then I will spell it out for you.

Forbes.com reports Ellison said: "Everyone looks around and is like, 'Yah! Like everything is in the cloud,' " mocked Ellison. "My objection is it's absurdity--it's nonsense...What are you talking about? It's not water vapor. It's a computer attached to a network!"

So Oracle has its "cloud" hosted computers running in rented data centers routing traffic over the public internet to its hosted applications. Cobbled together with IPaaS, the kludge glue that holds it all together. Sure its great for a standby database or perhaps storing backups, but not much else.

The oracle cloud is a joke compared to AWS, Azure, GCP or even IBM.

All the executives agree that cloud is the next big thing, but not one of them has stood up and done anything to make it happen at Oracle. Back in the day LE made sure Oracle ran on everything. He embraced Java, major changes were made. He pivoted Oracle like a champ. With cloud he has applied lipstick to an old pig. Pivot he did not.

He never talked bad about the C programming Language or Java, he got the point. With cloud he doesn't get anything. And no I am not TK. I am just a dude who thinks LE and his clueless crew are sunk.

And LE is the CTO!! He's the one that's supposed to know the technical side of cloud!!

It sounds like the real problem is that LE never got what cloud computing was. He was assuming it's just a marketing word, when it isn't. No doubt he turned to marketing and dev management to ask it he "had it".... and the yes-men working for him, who were clueless themselves, said "yes, you got it".

Then, they did essentially nothing other than use the cloud word a lot. Bunch of clueless id--ts all nodding their heads together. Ship is going down. Get out and get a real job.

The more LE says about cloud, the more his utter ignorance about the topic becomes abundantly apparent. Sort of like the guy in the White House. Two pies in the pod.

Remember the "grid computing" craze of the previous decade? Eventually LE decided that was worth paying attention to because he could use it to attack IBM. He rebranded some products with the "Grid" word and that was it. Problem is that you cannot do that with cloud computing. His competitors are using custom servers (Oracle uses their own stock X7 systems), their own FPGA's for networking, and most importantly 15 years development of cloud service and APIs. Amazon's first cloud-y service, Simple Queuing Service (SQS) , came out in 2004, just a little after LE was congratulating himself on Grid Computing.
