Thread regarding Sears layoffs

For those laid off, you will get through this

Take a short time to regroup. You will find a much better environment where your talents are utilized and have the potential for a positive impact. Working for SHC is like being in an abusive relationship. You need time to recover and make yourself right. But life looks a lot better once you do move on.

@VdsGyMP-opy I've got to disagree with you that there is a clear exit strategy devised from the top.

My shining example of this sort of thing done right is Best Buy. In 2010, the company was struggling. In 2012, they outright admitted they were in serious trouble. They came up with a strategy and since then they have: paid off HALF if the total company debt, decreased leases by almost 60%, and added almost two billion dollars to cash on hand.

In 2018, the company booked $80 million in one time expenses - that was a bonus pay out to employees. There was also a $20 million hit as a one time contribution to the Best Buy Foundation. That's $100 million they effectively have away while adding billions to their valuation and actually IMPROVING their stores.

Sears has none of that. No bonuses. No charitable giving. No improvement of stores or operations. Simply put, there's no strategy. It's just flailing until they get to a point where one week they won't make payroll, then they lock the doors.

For those affected today, if you are in Illinois, please file for unemployment on the IDES website today or tomorrow. Sears will not block this and in our state you can collect UI while on 'severance'....IDES has a 'waiting week' then after that once you certify after 2 weeks you will begin collecting unemployment benefits. When you sign the severance paperwork the fine print mentions that while 'Sears intends to pay out severance but reserves the right to stop it at any time'....considering the dire situation we have here it's best to protect yourself and file right away. If you get the 'Right management' resume service, use them to polish up your resume then post it right away on Indeed, Dice, Monster, etc websites. The job market is decent and you'll probably find some positions to apply for right away. In some cases you will be called by 'Headhunters' looking to fill jobs for their clients. Log all of these contacts on the IDES contact log that is downloaded from IDES website. I am confident withing a month or two you will have another job. Good luck to all. p.s. This is not a sad time, it's an opportunity to get out of a dying company and work for a profitable and vibrant company.... one that actually gives salary increases , matches a 401k and doesn't charge so much for health insurance......

@VdsGyMP-tzh Thank you. It takes a moment to realize you've been liberated. My personal hope--having been one of those laid off, is that I will recognize internal PR and propaganda a lot earlier in the future. I do believe years ago that SHC had implemented some positive things and they certainly employed many intelligent and very hard working people. However, in the past 5 years (and even more so this fiscal year) the decline has been rapid and very calculated with one exit strategy devised at the very top. Nothing but truth there.
