Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Filed a case with EEOC

I filed a case with the EEOC and it is being investigated as I write this. Sure they might be slow but if enough older folks file complaints it might make a difference.

Clearly VZ targeted older employees for a number of reason. Signing a severance agreement does not prevent you from filing a case - just wait until AFTER you get you last check.

im younger, im older, im this im that, you cant sue on every little thing. that's the problem with this country. if you don't want the offer don't take it. no one is forcing you but if they let you go after offer don't cry. you had your chance.

As a manager for over 10 years and no longer with the company as of recently they use rate and rank. I had to RIF many of my team in IT. Not once was my decision based on age. If you did your job and did not b--ch you were safe. The ones that s---ed at what they did or b--ched about everything OT, co-workers, can't be found, lack urgency, customer skills not up to par, were the first out the door.

Verizon also uses "pretext" for rif - in other words, I was told I was laid off due to budget reasons but the selection criteria had nothing to do with budget. Also, I was moved to a new position 3 months before being rif'd. Verizon uses the "rank and yank" rating system so of course I would rank low. Verizon HAS lost many discrimination cases. It's no secret Verizon wants to change to a younger, more modern workforce and us "old folks" just don't fit the mold.

Wasting your time. The company has billions to spend on lawyers. When i was RIF you get a spreadsheet listing all the positions being let go mine had over 25 job titles. Then it documents how many people in the title age 29, 30, 31, 32....all the way to 60 that were let go. So they are not stupid they let people across the board go so they will not get sued.

I have 30+ years. They are offering 3 weeks per year capped at 60 weeks . Am I being discriminated against because I get the same severance as someone with 20 years?

I was separated in December 2015 and filed my charge in 2016. By laying of the most tenured employees with higher salaries, they have laid off more older folks which is disparate treatment of a protected group. Even if nothing comes of the case I will feel better knowing I tried....

Good... I’m only 10 years in tenure I’m thinking of filing also because I think I won’t have a chance to take advantage of the office because I’m Younger and don’t make as much as older employees. So they are discriminating against me also.

older workers are not being targeted. employees with tenure at top pay bracket for job title are. it just so happens that these tenured workers are older in age. the EEOC will let you know this. good luck. at least you will not be paying legal fees.
