Thread regarding Sears layoffs

The last of the Mohicans

I find it fascinating to observe the last group of people still at Sears. I was there a few years back and most of the top performers from my team have left; some moved on to better companies in higher roles. The talk of bankruptcy has been in the air for years. Why are people still with Sears? Others proudly announcing they will ride it out?

I think the last of the Mohicans are not commendable nor brave. They are the same type of people who stay in abusive relationships year after year because it’s comfortable. They think that they can get their last check and transition over to a new job swiftly and smoothly. Well, reality will hit these Type D people. First off, if you are laid off and applying for work, it will take forever to get a job. Companies discriminate against the unemployed. Secondly, if you claim you lack skills and education- you are a lazy pig. You could have re-trained or re-skilled these past few years while you waited.

The point is, you have no one to blame but yourself. You had years of information and did nothing. Shame on you.

"Shame on you"? Every body have their own reasons to stick around. Some have a very high compensation. Some finding another job is easy because of theirs skill sets so a layoff is just like another layoff. Some like the commute. Some like work life balance it provides. Some just wanted to stay til the end and collect unemployment. Some need to unwind after a layoff. Some use this period as a vacation or to do their own projects. Some are optimistic and don't believe it will end. There are some just like you said like to be abused and maybe enjoyed to be in abusive relationship. Heck, each person is different. Don't tell them what to do since they are all adults.

People have their reasons, it's not for you to judge. One reason/problem I've seen is the employee is close to retirement by a few years. This bk talk has been going on for so long now that they hope if they duck & cover for a couple of years, they will have made it to the right side of retirement. Another is confidence in believing you can work somewhere else. There are many reasons and being mean isn't helping anyone.

The OP is making assumptions and generalizations and is coming across in a condescending and insulting way.

I was with Sears for 27 years and got out earlier this year and found another fulltime job with benefits...I had originally hoped to retire with Sears but the downward spiral of the company made it clear that the company will not last as long as my working career.

Some Sears stores are located in areas where work is more difficult to find...so some associates may not have many options to find other jobs.

Others may indeed have stayed on and held out hope that the company would make a turnaround....Everybody has their own reasons for sticking it out and it is their choice to make...

Anybody who hangs on until the end is F-d. Not just because of the good reasons already explained (employers severely discriminate against people who are not already / still in a job), but there is probably a recession coming, so there will be fewer openings available, and the people who got out ahead of the collapse will have filled many openings.

I'm 64 years old, and will soon retire with a thick nest egg. And one of the reasons for this is that I (am tired because) have been employed every single day since April 1976, because I always got out when the enterprise began to head south, while I was still employed, and before all of the hanger-on's flooded out.
