Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Alienated Alumni

At IBM benefits are being cut every year, the worker’s position is getting worse every year – I am bit jaded given the fact I was RA’d but whatever... Here is one example, 401k match is only done if you are working on Dec 15 of each year, so if you leave on Dec 14, tough luck, you’ve lost that year – what genius came up with this is beyond me…

Sure, it will save some money, but you will also piss off every single employee you have – so there is your trade off – go figure… So, I got cut in August, and I lost this money – good for you IBM, you’ve ensure that my new company never ever buys anything from you – I have a modest low six figure budget now, and I am certainly not spending any of that money on IBM.

"what genius came up with this is beyond me"

HR and Finance came up with this and its pretty simple. When you experience churn of about 25,000-40,000 people per year as a matter of course and strategy, it becomes increasingly difficult, as a business, to justify millions on 401k matches for folks that will not be adding value to the company by the end of the year. Now, I am by no means justifying them doing this and feel that its an abhorrent practice... but's not odd or surprising.

And, as far as pissing off all their employees, this is hardly a concerns to their leaders; despite any public statements that they may make. IBM currently has 1,699 jobs available in the US and there are currently ~11.5M technology workers, with another ~16M college students in the US soon to enter the workforce. So... there is hardly a lack of talent to backfill a position at a Big 4 company with global reach and influence in business and government.

Simply put: You are an expendable resource to a company like IBM and, based purely on the number of open positions weighed against the total potential candidate pool, you are worth approximately $0.00074 per dozen

I now compete with IBM, so satisfying to take revenue from them...

IBM stopped caring long ago about pissing off its employees. I don't know a single employee who isn't disgusted with this company. Many are looking for new jobs, some are counting days until retirement. Some take the risk of staying. But NO ONE trusts IBM.

You are not alone, IBM isn't selling anything to anyone.

Don't be fooled by the BS cloud reports, IBM is not even on the radar for companies moving to cloud.

Blockchain is the other area where IBM will drop the ball just wait and see.
