Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Don't let your pride get in the way...

What aren't people understanding? If you/your job were so valuable and essential to VZW you wouldn't have been part of the Offer, YOU will not be "safe" after all the volunteers leave, you will be left with a RIF at 2 weeks for every year. All business units have had a RIF for the past few years and its going to continue once this whole mess is sorted out don't be so arrogant to think that VZW needs you or you are so essential to business.

You're a title occupying an age bracket. Outsourcing IT is literally: mənē mənē təqēl ūp̄arsīn

Numbered, Weighed and Divided - this is not the same company. Nostalgic notions come with a cost.

That's not accurate, Verizon has lost discrimination (age and maternity, etc..) cases is the past . It didn't take long about two years and the cost was recoup in the settlement.

This is certainly targeting older, higher paid workers. Good luck with trying to file a claim or sue them if you are RIFed. Verizon is not concerned about discrimination. It takes too long and costs too much to prove.

Look at the stock market , it's down 3oo pts and the indicators are that jobless claims plunged and Bond yields are climbing. If you wait for tomorrow at 8:30 am your to late to adjust.

The labor statistics come out on the 5th (tomorrow) at 8:30 AM.

Exactly ufg. Older workers have a better chance staying. It would be hard to rif them.

The October jobs report #'s just came out and they are grim. Looks like the job market is going to hit a snag.

With this buyout offer to prove they are specifically looking to get rid of older employees, wouldn't they be in trouble if they later involuntarily RIF an older employee? It seems like you would have an easier time proving the company targeted you because of age and get a better settlement than the

severance they are offering.

All of these thousands of jobs are important & essential. They just don't want to pay American wages anymore. The cost of employee overhead is cutting into their profits. Most vacancies from layoffs are backfilled overseas, with a lower title, cheaper salary, and double the workload.

There is not a job at Verizon that can't be done for half the salary and that especially includes management....

Don't let fear get in the way either. Time to start a new chapter in your life and leave Verizon in the dust.

It might prove to be a bit difficult to assess a broken pole stituation, and dispatch the right number of line personnel and necessary equipment, from so far away

Yes there will be people left but be prepared to move to one of the main locations. TX is the new NJ.

They asked 44k, 144k would be the entire company but hey maybe that would be a good thing!

No, they asked 144k to leave but, if 144k responded yes, then you would see many were not, in reality, asked to leave, IMHO. A percentage of 144k will be shed.

No one is saying an individual is important, but rather some will have to stick around to make the company still a 100b giant.

Rifs have been going on forever, but it's usually targeted and certain groups have few here or there or some much more..

I can tell you for sure that most of the customer facing got the offer and you would be crazy to think they will just chop haphazardly. So not sure where we all will be come January, but again some will have to be left back to support something.

Retain??? They asked you to leave, if you and your job were essential to business needs you would not have gotten offered a package. Truth Hurts

Since VZW has done massive layoffs since 2010 every single year, what makes anyone think this won't continue? The STOCK has not moved in years and the only way to show value to your Stockholders is to cut costs. I hope all the people that claim they are staying are willing to relo, because that is the next phase if you aren't willing to move then take the money and go. Plus its easy to re-hire workers to do the same job for less money. WAKE UP

OP, and responding OP, troll much?

Don’t you think there’s the slightest of possibilties that once thousands and thousands and thousands of people leave, the need to retain those who stayed might go up just a smidgen?

Sad but true once I realized and accepted the fact that I had a false sense of entitlement I feel ok about this whole Offer and am ready to take my talents to a new job! Cheers to a new life! Good Luck to Everyone that has to face this reality!
