Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

How many will take it?

At first, at least judging by this board, I was certain a minimum of 90 percent will accept this offer. However, talking to coworkers and seeing some new posts, it's starting to look like it will be the other way around.

What happened??? What changed since before the offer was announced and now?

"Also change frightens people"... I thought the Verizon motto was "Change energizes us!"!

In my experience, a lot of people have a vague idea of being "ready to go," but when they sit down with calculator and pencil and paper, they see that they may not actually be. Likewise, people may tell themselves they have a talent stack that will get them a better job anywhere in no time, but then they face the realization that no matter how good the next job is, they'll be older, with less energy, trying to learn the ins and outside of a whole new company, as the new person on board

"It's no secret companies, including Verizon are targeting older workers, 'tard."

You are very intelligent, went past the 9th grade I see.

Here is what I fail to understand. Everyone keeps asking if people are going to take a buyout or package. Here is the real question: how many people are going to lose their job via buyout or RIF? The answer: as many as Verizon wants! Non-management retail employees are an easy out as the low cost to train represents a low value to the company. Next is non-wireless management. Many of them who have been around are mentioning this is a major change in policy, in which senior management is leaving. This sounds great until you realize you have an untrained workforce which doesn’t help boost numbers in the future. Next are union employees. Fios is being positioned to be sold off. Those who are offered a package and see no future with the company will take, those who live beyond their means or the older portion of the force will stay. Those who also have no education or skill set will also be forced to stay. These employees will then be forced out eventually or sold to another company. The contracts signed have clauses for the company to bail or close centers altogether or ship overseas. The company isn’t doing poorly, it is positioning itself to be more agile and realize the aging workforce is what is costing the company. If the company wanted 50,000 gone and could make their goals, they would do it without caring about who wants to take any level of package.

A couple of factors made it tricky for me. The 60 (I have 30 years service) cap and vz not being open about any change to severance in future are two key items. I did not expect they woukd go beyond 60, so no surprise there. Also, we know some reogs are about to happen, so will see what happens before nov 10. I’m still probably 50/50, but i was really planning on staying another 3 to 4 years before going into semi-retirement, and this has thrown in a monkey wrench. My performance and job function helped me think a rif was low probability, and if happened with normal severance would not be too bad, but 4 week severance and possibe big reorgs or sell offs or relocates in wireline make me pretty nevous about the next 3 years. 5g will take a while to drain the wireline margins, but it will be hitting hard pretty soon. So, riding it out looks rough, but leaving a solid vz job with good benefits is a hard choice.

I took the package at another company that did the same thing. The older workers who didn't take the package got RIFed a few months later and got no package. If you were offered the package you are on the list.

My boss and a few co workers say they took it.

So stay or go it will be change since they’ll either merge what is left with another group, just cut the rest of us or say we have to move which is basically the same thing.

Of course I want to leave. Becoming the lowest person on the totem pole in a new much lower paying job with less benefits isn’t too appealing though.

It came down to this for me:

Do I really want to go work for another company, for lesser pay, with less benefits? No, I'll keep the current job I hate, so I dont have to work for some other c-appy job at another $hitty company with zero tenure and less vacation time.

While the package may be appealing and its alot of money for someone like me with 16.5 yrs, its just not worth the risk. Company will lay me off when its time, there is no need to rush the process early.

It will s--- though, when I am laid off, knowing I could have had more money in my pocket due to the increased severance benefits offered now.

With this buyout offer to prove they are specifically looking to get rid of older employees, wouldn't they be in trouble if they later involuntarily RIF an older employee? It seems like you would have an easier time proving the company targeted you because of age and get a better settlement than the

severance they are offering.

I agree, everyone could not wait for offer. Now I don’t think 5 percent will go. People are afraid to make the move. Mostly just a fantasy for most. Company may end up rifting if numbers are not good. It’s all a gamble.

People are not happy - hence the large number before announcement. When the announcement happened, reality set in - People are not sure that they can find a similarly compensating job outside. Also change frightens people
