Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Where is the industry headed?

If you're like me, you have had Verizon on the brain since the email came. We all have our theories what December 10th is going to look like. 44.000 people. Think about it. That is 30% of the company who have been offered a VSP, all in their quoted "efforts to go lean". But, have you considered "why?" Why would a company want to ditch those who built the foundation of the company? Yes, they have said that they are restructuring in order to have the revenue to lay 5G. And yes, Verizon is in a race with AT not us. Not anymore. So...then what happens? No need for retail stores either. When the industry got out of the business of subsidized phones with a two year contract, that started the decline on the industry. The cellphone industry is no longer in double digits on growth. New business across the industry is now in single digits on growth, and still bleeding. This is not just Verizon. The entire industey. Customers are no buying new phones every two years with a contract. (Lost revenue). Phones are EXPENSIVE! I, for one, will wait until my phone doesn't work anymore and I'm forced to buy another, and I was that "every two year customer" on a new phone.

This equates to a HUGE loss in cash flow. Everyone knows that "sales is the cure all to increase shareholder value". When there are no sales to increase shareholder value, companies have to find the cash by other means. Get ready folks, I think BIG changes are about to happen to the industry. No phone sales. Require everyone to "bring their own phone". Offer just the service. Any thoughts?

I think that Wireless alone is not the sole target. Retail stores will continue to operated, perhaps with fewer employees, or more part timers... the real issue will be back office... and on the enterprise sales side. I fear for the administrative folks who keep the company moving, the lines up, customers are happy, and insure that proper billing takes place. These are "non-revenue" roles, and are often seen as overhead, when in fact they are what allow the front line sales people to do their jobs of selling.

Automation. Sales, Shipping, Service, etc. Eliminate the middle of all things.
