GBS – Reporting to a much younger manager

Hello all – I’ve joined IBM two years ago and right now I am about 20 years older than my current manager. The manager is young and smart but very inexperienced, I am sure with time she’ll blossom but right now things are just awkward given the age gap and the lack of experience.

I’d love to bridge the gap but we seem to be very different from many angles (e.g., my kids are in college know) – any thoughts on what I may do to make things a bit easier for both of us (I think she’s uncomfortable giving direction and demanding things from me and I am a bit reluctant to voice my opinion as I may come across as preaching)?

Thoughts?

Oh holy cow, talk about a spot-on comment. For the last couple of years, these utterly preposterous sightings have become all too common in the hallways.

An inexperienced manager in IBM needs allies. Help her, give your advice and become her right hand man. She will never forget it.

IBM = id--ts Become Managers

Remember, when you cannot do the work then IBM makes you a manager.

Even though IBM is winding down it's hiring bias... https://www.propublica.org/article/amid-accusations-of-age-bias-ibm-winds-down-a-push-for-millennial-workers

Like anything at IBM it will take years.

So you won't beat them, join them. Take more coffee breaks, ask for a second monitor to play games on. Ignore your customers and kiss your managers a-- with terms like "exceptional" and "incredible insight". Most important act and look younger, if Steve Buscemi can do it you can too!

My team lead is a first time manager. She has been in the position for 2 years. She is learning her corporate lines really well. Anyone trained in IBM to be a manager will definitely be an enemy of the worker. Get out of IBM NOW!

So few managers ever become good managers and one of the things that make good managers is experience. Unfortunately,I don't see this problem getting any better no matter what you do. I would think that the best position to take is a neutral and helpful position, maybe make suggestions when appropriate, but try and refrain from trying to instruct. Unless you have a young manager with a strong sense of self and who is willing to listen an learn from anyone, which doesn't sound like the case here, you will likely end up being a learning experience for her and that won't be good for you.

Someone mentioned trying to switch managers and I would certainly agree with that.

If you still want to climb the corporate ladder, move managers immediately. Inexperienced managers will not support you in getting anything more than the minimum. Source: I’m living this nightmare right now.

If not, you’re in GBS so why do you care? We never have to deal with our “managers” unless you want to move up. Even then it’s better to have your 2nd or 3rd line close since they’re the ones who make the promotion (and RA) decisions.

I gave up on first line manager relationships after a few weeks at IBM. In our top heavy org, your efforts are better spent networking over their head.

I got dinged after posting here. I'm just saying that the company we're working for has never made a habit of keeping secrets. I've seen people reading between lines and making things up that aren't actually being said, and I pointed out its not healthy to speculate about things we don't know for sure yet. That's all I pointed out to people. You're absolutely right that people have the right to their own perception and situation. My own situation I am rather reliant on this job, without it, the wages, and the insurance, I may be very well a dead man. So I get all the aspects here.
