Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Current manager

I was not affected by the layoffs yesterday. But the way the layoffs have been handled I cannot in good conscience continue working for this company. As soon as I find employment elsewhere I am out of Cisco.I know some of my fellow managers feel the same way. When your forced to cut hard working people who are vital in your department, and then your expected to do the same work without them,so now everyone is stressed to the max, knowing they have to pick up the slack.Enough is enough.Your not allowed to give them heads up,that there being layed off. This will be the last time that I will be forced to get rid of people that have no business being layed off.Cant wait to exit this disfunction.

I'm not a manager, let alone, I was never asked to lay off anyone. So, talk is cheap, but what I would have done:

Refuse to name engineers to let go. Refuse to have 1:1 with let go engineers. I understand that then someone else would take over these tasks.

I would do that even if I would get fired for disobedience. This would make me proud for the rest of my life.

Laying someone off would make me miserable for the rest of my life. This causes so much misery in people's lives.

Op, you are a good person and Cisco does not deserve to have you. Stay true to your principles and find a more deserving company where you'll be happier.

How did you become a mgr at Cisco with such poor English grammar skills? It is "you are or you're" not "your".

in Dev/Devtest the % of managers who have done real tech work (g11 level) before changing role to manager is very low in BGL. most came in as managers from outside. they can only forward mails and put harsh comments on scrubber notes to pressurize poor workers.

the old seasoned managers are long gone. the dregs and brown nosers are mostly whats left.

Managers are useless in Cisco. They only forward emails. They are not leaders. In other organization the manager will leave the job first before doing any thing that is irrational like doing job withiut people and just play politics

My manager did give me a months headstart snd luckily was able to get a decent external job after a hurried prep and couple of fails. These days cos expect the world from people so interviews are a hit or miss even if well prepared

I wish you luck in your job search. I was affected and it is awful. Some managers did tell their people in advance - I was and that actually made it worse since I had to train the person just hired who is now apparently my replacement. Really bad corporate citizens at Cisco.
