Think about the magnitude of that number. 44k employees. That’s over 20-25 percent of the whole company including associates. If your in management you have a 1 in 4 chance your gone anyway you slice or dice it. Crazy

Let's not kid ourselves. There will be future RIFs as a bi-product of all of the consolidation of business units. That won't happen on 1/1/19. It will take time to figure out who does what and how many of the remaining people they need to do it. This volunteer package may be all that go right away. After that, there will be a bunch of political posturing going on internally to try to land at the top of the heap. I'd bet a summer 2019 RIF at the earliest but more likely by next Thanksgiving.
What i'm hearing is they are looking to lose 30-35% through this plan and the rifs next year and 2020. They got a number to hit so whatever it takes to hit it. The more take it now the less will get riffed but 2019 rifs seem a given.
i think they offered it to 44k to avoid dealing with the fallout from future RIFs. what i mean is, they obviously have a number of people they want to leave the business, right (and its not 44k)? say, 10K for arguments sake. and they get 5K volunteers. after 11/17, guess what happens? the other 5k they wanted, get RIF'd, as well (probably as early as Thanksgiving - off payroll end of December) - without the enhanced VSP package. and the RIFees wouldn't have a leg to stand on because the business could simply argue that they offered you an enhanced VSP, and you didn't take it. s**cks to be you. think it through.

It was "offered to 44,500 management employees, it does not mean they want to get rid of all 44,500.
In 2003, offered to 74,000 and accepted by 21,600.
Why are you taking 44K as the number. The may be expecting a yield of 10% from whatever modelling they have done. So that would be 4400 - still a lot of people but nowhere close
