Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Cisco IoT produt is dead

I was part of the Cisco Jasper 1.4billion acquisition. Another sad example of how large company can mangle an agile and innnovative product. New management from Cisco came in and it was so painful to see them wrestle with basic SAAS concepts. They could not spell "IOT" :-) Thats what happens when all you know is how to sell boxes. New SVP brought in her lackey VP and they started slashing costs. They only had 1 internal all-hands meeting in 8 months, offered no solid strategy, no alignment to larger Cisco, no effort to streamline. Complete chaos. Meanwhile SPV and VP are prancing around twitter attending women-empowering conferences and BS activities while their business is tanking.

Jasper product service is in serious jeopardy. Many key product and network engineering talented individual either bailed or leaving. I feel sad for customers who will be kept in the dark. This is a definition of poor leadership and lack of communication and a complete lack of transparency.

Regardless of what’s going on in Cisco, Jasper has a great product but c-appy business model. They have been trying to get piece of service provider business which is not going to work. We all who worked at Jasper knew already how cheap we have sold solutions to service providers.

If Cisco acquired Amazon, the website would crash and burn inside a month and orders would stop.

Cisco ELT would then give themselves 60% bonuses and then LR everyone over 30.

Yea, Cisco customer experience ("CX") is playing around with the new idea of recurring revenue model while working with the engineering product team ("BU/BE"). Yet the frequent strategy shift in the BUs results in the compelled changes in CX too. As a result, no product gets delivered; it becomes a tug of war between CX and BUs, a tug of war between Leadership teams, something what we call "office politics".

It's quite a drama, quite interesting to watch.

I left Jasper right before the acquisition and I can tell you that at the time, it was THE leader in its field. No one else even came close. They had huge customers like Coca Cola, Amazon, and ADT that were so deeply embedded in their software that it would take quite some time and a huge amount of effort for them to leave Jasper if anything else came along that was even remotely close to the Jasper app. So if Jasper is dying, it's completely the fault of Cisco. After all, how often do hardware companies learn quickly how to sell software they didn't build?

I can’t believe the lady’s post but want to understand that mindset

Just what is it about cisco engineering teams at ground level that you found hostile, scary or unfriendly to need the reassurance of these high level critters having your back by laying lip service?

I worked 18 years before being booted out recently, including with some fine women engineers and they never showed a scared mindset

@2ktk Kitchen of Things (KoT), is that what you're working on?

I can't comment on the validity of Jasper's success, but I came to give a different side of the "prancing" around on Twitter. As a young female engineer, I find executives posting about such female-facing conferences to be more meaningful than "prancing." It's beyond difficult to be a woman in this field, especially a young one, and conferences like that are made to try and create a better work environment for us. So, seeing executives going to / supporting such conferences makes us women feel valued and confident that they will always have our backs and won't go follow whatever their male counterparts may say.

As shirley said, I apologize if you were impacted, but I think you are failing to see entire other side of this. Believe it or not, new management takes time to adjust and the IoT sector is just getting started. The best things grow with time, and besides, who said they can't go to women-empowering conferences AND focus on their business?

PS: to the anonymous user above that compared women-empowering conferences to "BS activities" -- you are in serious need of a reality check. Welcome to the future of tech, my friend. Better get used to women rising above NOW, because we won't be going away anytime soon.

Jasper found creative ways to fake (lie about) growth.

Jasper rev growth was second highest in all of Cisco last two quarters. Jasper enterprise and device growth is also stellar. the idea that Jasper is a c-appy business is purely a narrative the new leader wishes to put out there so she can be the hero down the line.

Regardless, it is very clear that Cisco's interest in IoT is shipping networking boxes. If there is any other product, its sole purpose must be to create more need for networking boxes...and the path better be direct. Otherwise, that product is deemed 'not good' and all the organizational anti-bodies will seek to kill it. Jasper is a great product any PE / VC firm would love to have in their portfolio. The current leadership just doesn't understand it and lacks the vision (and curiosity) to try. Unfortunate.

Jasper people - you are WAY too smart to stay at Cisco. Get out. Your talent will be richly valued elsewhere. Guaranteed.

There's a lot of accuracy about the "Cisco isn't getting SaaS", though.

Joined through an acquisition, was on the transition team, can't count the times I had to explain that there is no box and no shipment - it's all in the cloud.

"...but where do you put the label on?"

Jasper is still key part of strategy. It is a good revenue base and growing business. And will continue to grow. Changes were needed. Lots of blame to go around - past Jasper leadership, past Cisco leadership, current Cisco leadership. Whatever. There is growth in the Jasper business. There is growth in the IoT business. Lots of honing if strategy, focus, prioritization, rolling up of sleeves needed. And it can be done and will be done.

Jasper had 3 years after acquisition to scale up and do great things with the Cisco resources. Instead it did nothing. All the Jasper leadership should have been replaced. It's a pity most of them have remained.

Jasper had their own chance to grow the business independently and failed. Hard to blame Cisco leadership for coming in and trying to save the business

This post is 100% accurate. In my last two Cisco organizations, the environment was eerily similar to the one described.

  • 1 internal all-hands meeting in 8 months

  • no solid strategy

  • complete chaos

  • SPV and VP are prancing around twitter attending women-empowering conferences and BS activities while their business is tanking

Jasper is ONE part of the strategy.. Cisco IoT is far from dead.

NOTE: if you were impacted i am sorry but this is just not an accurate post.
