Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Is working from home a good thing?

A lot of developers stay only because of the generous work-from-home policies in some divisions, that's it.

If you work from home and are not wanting to be laid off, you need to be aware that people who work from home are not counted in WARN notices. Consequently, they can be preferred targets for layoffs.

I know someone who, after a layoff in their group, was suddenly asked by the manager if they would like to work from home. They didn't have a great relationship.... just suddenly they were offered work from home. They were able to leave fairly quickly afterwards, but I expect they were planned to be the next on the layoff list. They were given a difficult project, that should have been worked on by a large group, QA support was removed, and there was no way they were going to succeed. They were being set up. Be aware that working from home can be a carrot that leads to a layoff.

above is from @W3OB5t8-2bsk

In addition, I believe in the article on IBM that was posted here a while back, I believe they mentioned that the company wiped out people working from home as part of the strategy to lower costs. Often people working from home got there by being exceptional at their jobs, but it doesn't necessarily count, when a company it looking to cut heads. Look at the decimation of the sales force and replacement with cheap copies in the hubs. No thought about who does good work is considered. You are just another body at Oracle.

People from home can also be resented by the people they work with.

You are what's wrong with the company. The slime that is trying to take money for nothing.

I worked from home and I did honest work. At the end I had medical issues that got significantly worse and I worked late hours. I think that the people I worked with made up c-ap about me and one of the things I believe they thought was that I had a second job during the day. This happened even though I explained my issues.

Honest people can't succeed because there are too many people scamming the company or doing something slimy, so everyone thinks the same thing of everyone else. Oracle is a deep pit filled with snakes and scum. No one who is honestly working, can survive there.

Get out if you can, if you are a good developer, you are seriously wasting your time.

If you are working from home, keep in mind that it's easier for the people you are working with to make up lies without you knowing. Pass a few lies around and convince people to sabotage you or not work with you is an easy thing to do. It's very easy to convince people to resent someone who works from home, even if they need to do that for medical reasons. I should have quit earlier, no point in working with filth.

Guess what? Although we WFH folks aren't counted in WARN notices, we don't count Oracle as an employer. We get a check from LE, and do actual work for other firms. Double dipping is OK for execs, and OK for techs! Nya nya nya!

I’m from North America. It depends if your manager allows you. For example, I work one day from home. I know few managers don’t allow to wfh. Working from home or working at home are better than working for home :). I enjoyed most while I’m in office. Reaching out to remote worker over phone or zoom is a pain.

WFH is great for workers. Not so great for clueless uninspiring managers who get brownie points for getting their employees to badge in to the building every day.

Providing the IT infrastructure to support home workers has got to cost less than providing parkng spaces, office space, A/C, cafeteria, plus the savings in time (my commute before switching to work-at-home was 50 minutes each way - in good weather) and gasoline to the employee.

And multi-way desktop video conferencing is now a thing. And since many of our meetings were by phone with co-workers in India, it hardly mattered.

Keep in mind that many who work from home are not officially remote workers and the often have an office/cubicle in an Oracle office,

It sounds like things are more flexible in India. That's interesting to me.

If you work from home once in a while, I don't consider that to be someone who works from home. There are people who work from home all the time and have no office in any oracle building. Oracle has been cutting down on those people.

Yep, a lot of places pretty much eliminated work from home, like IBM, Google, Yahoo, most of Apple, etc. It's the one benefit that ORCL can still offer to keep developers leaving in large numbers. RIFing a remote worker is a little more than a phone call; there's some logistics involved with returning equipment and badges, etc. Full-time work at homers are always more vulnerable to RIFs if you ask me, because they aren't seen in hallways and become anonymous names on a list.

30% of the employee in IDC are working from home. Working from home for 2 to 3 days of a week is very common. This is followed even by the directors. Because it is done at the high level the people working under them will naturally follow the same. Too much flexible culture has spoiled the company and it is in front of us today.

Agreed ; it's easier to get rid off an employee who works from home: just a phone call away. ..

At Oracle, it is my understanding that a large majority of employees (at least in North America) have the option to work from home.
