Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

AT&T to acquire Verizon Wireline in 2019

How realistic is this. I've heard some rumors but wanted to hear what the board thinks. I am sure there will be a lot of 'oh, just go away' and 'you make no sense', etc, etc, but I'd still be interested to see if there is someone here who's willing to think and write about this.

I think Huawei can buy wireline/fiber from both companies and use their own 5G equipment to bring 5G :)

Why would anyone take the debt from Verizon/AT&T. These may be sold if the companies write off the debt

I work for AT&T and we heard same rumors, that ATT is selling wireline to such and such...., but I am sure no company want to invest in wireline business in the future, too expensive to install and maintain, all we hear our big wigs talk about all day is big data and wireless, and I am sure it’s the same thing for you guys, I feel like all these id--ts go to the same meetings and trainings.....

I would think there is a better chance that an overseas company would buy Wireline IF Verizon can manage to offload all of its billions of dollars of debt to the buyer. Any remaining U.S. telecom is too debt laden or will not be able to raise the billions Verizon would ask for wireline. I would think that by now most U.S. companies would have better sense than to buy any of the Wireline from Verizon...what with the past results of Hawaii/GTE, Frontier and others.

Of course maybe Google will buy the Wireless side and leave the Wireline side straddled with the debt?

Frontier or Crown Castle would be more realistic purchasers. Crown just bought out Lightower (aka FiberTech) last year and they already own quite a few of the towers. I think Verizon has too much momentum on a full blown fiber network of their own for this to be a consideration.

These sort of posts give this board no merit, from a technological standpoint, verizon will never sell wireline. Please stop spreading the rumor that they will or are thinking about it.

As some have told me there certainly must be something going on for the company to settle with the union so early. One option is a sale of wireline but who would want to buy it.

That would be interesting to see AT&T and Verizon form a large landline company.

'tis only a rumor. There is no possible way the buy / merger of ATT and Verizon would pass DOJ or regulatory vetting. Hell, look at how much trouble T-Mobile / Softbank had with the Sprint attempt and it failed.

As for other companies buying wireline, I doubt any of them have the cash / backing to buy wireline. I doubt any company, even a capital venture firm would want wireline unless it included all backbone fiber, existing contracts and future contracts locked in for 20 years with wireless being required to use the existing VZ wireline pipe.

Without wireline, wireless would be nothing more than a database of customers. If the two were split off then wireless would likely be coupled with Oath and reformed into another entity. Wireline would be reformed into an entity free of Verizon Wireless and wireline and would once again show its true profit worth.

The problem with that is that wireless would be forced to lease back all the pipe and to spend billions of their own money to saturate the market with micro-sites to support the magical 5G wet dreams. If wireless had to spend that money then their true profitability would be revealed.

In short 'Daddy Wireline' has paid for wireless growth and I doubt the company will be broken up because wireless can't stand on its own...unless it operates like T-Mobile.

If the wireless side were to stand on its own it would be forced to operate like T-Mobile and cut prices, up data and to truly compete with the others. I just cannot imagine that happening.

I’m not sure who would buy it or could afford it.

I’m not saying it isn’t worth anything it just isn’t s-xy/trendy/future.

I expect it’ll be like they did with idearc (directories).

Actually everything that happens right now seems to indicate Wireline will be up for sale in 2019. Whether it's going to be AT&T or some other carrier and whether or not international business will be chipped off and sold separately is going to be the interesting question. In the light of what's happening now, acquisition of AOL and Yahoo only appears like the particularly unwise move (read: total waste of money) that it was.

Not likely. AT&T is riddled with debt! And their CEO seems to want to be in the entertainment business not telephone business.

You would first have to ask yourself , who would buy a company with the debt of Vz? and then why? Its a Hugh price with debt. It would weigh a "Good" company down. Not good business sense.

Hans is CEO

The Board allowed senior executives to turn their telecom cash cow into an advertising all so ran

Verizon bought AOL and Yahoo well past the expiration date and let Tim Armstrong run them without any adult supervision

The company is actually being reorganized; no fooling!

The company is now run by Europeans with no ties to any Verizon predecessor company

And someone might think that what you are suggesting is out of the question?

I don’t think the FEDs would approve it. Borderline monopoly. Wireline, Wireless, Direct TV, and they own HBO among others. But never know. I heard rumor of Frontier
