This article reports that Intel has made up its mind to sell McAfee and that talks with potential buyers are already occurring. A private equity firm Thoma Bravo has been believed to be potential buyers. The potential value of the sell has not yet been disclosed by the company, but it is estimated that the value of the sale could reach $4.2 billion.

They may actually get all their money back. Another (CFO) BS move that is going to pay off - they got it off their books but kept 49% control of the then-valuation (and 51% of the cash), all the while McAfee is grossing ~$550M a quarter. Recent reports say they will get north of $4.2B this time around. Net-net, they make money or escape as a wash. Could have been far worse.
Better to admit that was a mistake and move on at least.
