Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Any layoffs today?

Have there been any more layoffs today? I've been nervous ever since I learned about the unexpected cuts from Monday...

The rule is you HAVE to clear out contractors before you can go after the salaried. This is the reason for mass contractor layoffs, they need to get at the salaried - and WILL get at the salaried. These salaried, will likely become contractors themselves for other companies.

While it's ironic, because they didn't get enough salaried buyouts, it f**ked everything and everyone up. Now GM has bulldozed a path through contract, to get at those playing russian roulette that wouldn't take the buyout anyways.

However, with contract, first out the door, first back in the door. GM's policy is to retain a 20% contract ratio so I've heard. The problem with scenarios like these, is that they sweep out both the 20 year veterans that offer the job of three, with the two week new contractor, that barely has a clue how to turn on their computer.

When you count on others, always expect to be disappointed. It should ease the blow. GM has been a disappointed for at least two decades for me. Hence, why this isn't such new news.

Wow...that’s absolutely horrible. Makes me ashamed to work for GM.

We’re these factory folks? Contractors? White collar?

Some people got calls from HR yesterday night, telling them not to come into work today. Wow, at least let them have a nice Christmas break, rather then handing them this gift a day before a 10 day company shutdown break.

GM Warren will be laying off all through January 15th. That's only what they tell us. They've known about this for many months prior, so be weary of what they don't tell us. Many on the inside are upset, and I know many dozen on the inside.

I've worked in a GM environment for about 15 years of my life as contract. On the outside, I've always been told you should support your company by purchasing their vehicle. Of those 15 years, I've been laid off almost a half dozen times through situations you are unable to control. My response is, don't you ever tell me who to trust, nor support. I am a mercenary for hire, to supply a skill set for their need, and nothing more. When the project is done, you are done. If I buy GM, it'll be used, so they don't receive a penny.

Contractors remember. Not only do they not purchase the product, they becomes advocates against, for life. Oops. That's a lesson they forgot to teach leadership. How to grow an everlasting network of word of mouth promoters.

Anonymous posted that some direct hires with 20-30 years of experience were notified by email (https://www.thelayoff.com/t/WFX0zie). This was posted on this past Monday, but not sure if that means the direct hires were notified on that day. Layoffs will occur in January and February (sooner rather than later). GM won't want to risk delivering bad news to the market that they missed their layoff target.
