Thread regarding Sears layoffs

While Sears execs are enjoying their bonuses laid off workers are trying to make ends meet

I know this”bonuses situation” has been brought up a few times on this board, but I couldn't resist posting this good articlče that pinpoints the paradox of the whole situation a captures the worker side of the story. Cutting severance to pay the execs that took the company down in the first place, taking from the poor and giving to the rich, great strategy Sears. Shame on the leadership for doing this.

42 years?? Wow, surely you have Medicare by now? If not, you can sign up for another plan on healthcare.gov outside of the open enrollment period by providing a copy of that letter as proof that you just lost your health insurance.

My severance was cut along with my hospitalization and life insurance and i was not notified until 2 days before my next check. I was awaiting medical vital medical procedures and now have had to put them off against medical concerns. I gave Sears my life and Eddie had no problem taking it. Literally. 42 years of service and loyalty for nothing. I think I will have my sentiments carved on my tombstone.

From what I've seen our store has been selling imaginary product to people for the last two months. Beginning of October everything in the department was unable to order and priced at full price no sale at all then after the bankruptcy filing you could order it, but would be out a month then after the month a large percentage of the merchandise was pushed out another month basically everything sold that wasn't at the local warehouse never showed then now the 15% off sale price stacked with 10% if you use a card is selling alot of stuff at cost or below especially Samsung and LG but the stuff sold at the end of November is already getting 3-4 week long delayed delivery's.....They just trying to hit sales goals with product they can't get and see how long a customer will put up with the delayed deliveries and making the employees sell it anyway so the execs can get a bigger bonus or secretly liquidating stores still open or just operating so poorly over half the sh-- sold on delivery never gets to the customer who knows I'm just there to watch it burn at this point

“Under these circumstances, it would be understandable if many key employees are asking themselves whether they should be seeking other opportunities”

Yeah, they probably should, seeing as how the real key employees are the ones in the stores.

I hate that this is how business is run anymore, it should be a crime. It's just now taken as some financial game, just bleed the next one dry and move on. Who will they kill next after Sears?

@bsj- to just give a little perspective to your post. Many Sears and Kmarts are in smaller communities where employment opportunities are limited. Second, you are correct, sometimes people do make mistakes or bad decisions in their lives. But when someone is trying to better themselves and taking whatever job they can get then what do you want them to do? should they turn the job down because it doesnt pay enough or it is not full time with benefits. Or are you one of those people that will complain if someone is trying and also complain when they sit at home and collect welfare? You can't have it both ways.

Third, who cares how many kids they have. I have four and both myself and my wife were working until she got cancer and had to quit her job. We both are college educated and had jobs that paid well.

I had to take a part time job along with my regular job to make ends meet. Her job carried the health care and we are in debt over $300,000 in medical cost even with the insurance.

Finally, I hope that when something happens in your life, and it will because it happens to all of us, you look back and think about your statement of "What I'm saying is we are a product of our own environment" I hope your environment never changes but if and when it does be prepared. Have a good day and I wish you a better heart for humanity.

Deserve? For what? Ruining a company. The blood sweat and tears is on the front line. The workers who haven't seen raises in years but keep working hard for their families. Those laid off but get no severence. So sad the lazy Corp just get money handed to them. Deserve?? Lol

You people on here will never understand why we deserve the bonuses, and simply think your just owed a handout. Now, I do agree some do not deserve it, but some of us have really stuck it out and actually made a difference within Sears. Just to put it out there, we don't really care what you think about us. Thank you for choosing Sears, and Good luck!!

they bonus money not paid yet. Part performance paid in the future and part retention paid after you do the time

I'm sure I'm in good company by saying these top execs don't deserve the jelly of month subscriptions. Even better would be for them to bull whipped on national TV by the employees that they have clearly screwed.

Here's where I will lose most of you. Looking at that article, which clearly intended to pull at your heart strings. Let's take a clear look at Ondrea Patrick. Worked there PT for 9 years for $10.50...why? Why not FT? Why not find another job where she could work FT for a better company? Why does she have 5 children? If you aren't making ends meet...adding more and more children isn't gonna make your life easier. She has a 1 year old...Sears was waaaay over the cliff 1 year 9 months ago. Stop making your life harder!!!! For heavens sakes use protection dad or keep it in your pants!!!

While I am sorry that these people are losing their jobs, been there, done that. What I'm saying is we are a product of our own environment. Make bad choices and get bad results. Now, the article only paints these people as the victims and Sears as the robber...which is the point. So we will never get the full story as to why she only worked PT for so long at a dead company.

I understand retention bonuses, but this should be criminal. Unfortunately paying a severance is not mandated in most circumstances.
