People in India should buy from Indian companies. Indian Government is not going to allow companies taking away billions without creating any jobs.

Just go to your director (bypass your manager -- they're useless) and asked to be put on the list. He can't officially accept or even acknowledge volunteers, but if he's got any decency at all you'll get what you want. I retired from Dell this way a couple of years ago -- nice to get a little gift on the way out.

There was news recently that some technical managers have been given notice and that their people will be absorbed into Customer and Professional Services.
No, you can request from your manager though. Your manager is in direct control of who gets chosen mostly.
Just curious, can one volunteer for the layoff? Could you bypass your manager and go right to HR and ask to be put on the list?
Generally, it is left up to the manager and director, managers need to provide stack ranking of his direct reports and periodically keep it updated. Whenever RIF needs to be done names are already ready, directors go through the list make changes if required. Salary and Age certainly has an impact, being workaholic doesn't matter.
Nothing new... They will cut some excesses and those people with poor performance
So, what is old and what is high for a salary?
Previous reductions at Dell, they create a spreadsheeet with employees in the department being reduced Witt employee name, age and salary.
If you are a senior employee with a higher salary you are selected and receive a letter explaining you are no longer an employee at Dell. And within 2 weeks will receive a FedEx package with your release information that will include everyone in your department names with age next the names.
Somehow this is to show that not all older employees in the department are terminated.They also somehow skirt around any WARN requirement filings.So if you are a senior employee (especially from EMC ) and higher salary which most EMC employees are compared to DELL employees you will be targets for a RIF. Now that they are becoming a public company again the scrutiny of earnings and the enourmous debt MSD brought to buy EMC this will be the business model until DELL is no longer losing money and turning a significant profit to satisfy stock market
