A Failure at Kmart/ Sears....A Failure at Pier 1

Fort Worth, Texas-based Pier 1 announced that Chief Executive Officer Alasdair James has stepped down from the role. Longtime board member Cheryl Bachelder has been appointed to the position of interim ceo, effective immediately.

James had been with the company since May 2017, having joined the company from Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears where he had been president over Kmart stores for three years.

Bachelder has been on Pier 1’s board since 2012. She was also ceo at Popeyes Lousiana Kitchen (Miami) from 2007 to 2017.

The company has also hired advisers to help it consider strategic alternatives, including a potential sale, reports The Dallas Morning News.

Let's see where James ends up next, unless he retires of course.

Pier One has been a dead dog for a long time now. My 2 questions are WHY would James want to go to another failing retailer and WHY would a failing retailer look to hire someone from Sears/Kmart? Does misery truly love company?

Its not like no one is shopping brick & mortar there's just TOO MANY stores for the B&M environment

No excuse for what happened at Pier 1, but I'm half inclined to give anyone who has to take marching orders from Eddie a mulligan for anything that happens at SHC. It's impossible to succeed under that kind of constraint.

CEO is a permanent job. You just go on to another company, no matter how bad you are.
