Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Want to feel better about yourself? Don't buy GM products.

This is likely a lesson most will have not learned yet. Perhaps this mass layoff, is their first time....

To the youth of this company, let those that came before tell you a story. This company today, is acting like the company of yesterday, in which you will find yourself again in the future, at it's mercy of another repeat we find ourselves today. Layoffs, replacements, downsizing, it's not random, it's a pattern with this company. This may be your first experience, but you will notice your second experience, and it will again become obvious on your third experience - as the company claims to advance towards new opportunities.

They say, never bite the hand that feeds you. I've heard from countless others, support those that you work for. My question is, what if those that feed you, those that support you, toss you out of the house, naked, cold, hungry, randomly, with nothing left? Who's to blame, and how far and under what conditions should your loyalty remain? What IS your breaking point?

Having vision works both ways. The vision to see where you are going, as well as the vision to avoid the immovable object standing within your path. GM management, only has 50% of this vision, and they do that quite subpar, it's actually an abomination what their level of management actually knows.

Their piece of paper does NOT define intellect, which is proven time and time again. They always look ahead, and will never look at the roadblocks. This is the difference between an intellectual, and someone that wings the situation. They hire temperaments that are NOT intellectuals, and this is part of their downfall.

I am a two year veteran of GM, and have felt the pain of almost a half dozen layoffs. Of those layoffs, I've never once quite a company. It was always corporate downsizing, layoffs, or some other nonsense. It has always been an affliction. You might perhaps think, maybe you weren't pulling your weight. That wasn't true, as I was as talented as some, and more talented as most. I figured out, if I didn't a**kiss a long time ago, I wasn't part of the crew. I bow down to no man. I sell my soul to no one.

So. You should know that idiocracy lives. Those less intelligent than yourself, likely run your affairs. God help you if you are an intellectual, and your superiors are not. Confidence is knowledge, and by understanding of the game in which you exist, helps you to understand your opponent.

Mary Barra, is simply CEO 2.0 of those that came before her. I knew this day would come back in 2015, and it has. She dismissed many of my friends, and worse. It's the single reason, I will NEVER support GM, and I have become an advocate for life. I will exchange mercenary talent for pay, but never anything more. I will purchase her opponents vehicles, and never hers.

Know your enemy, know yourself. If you fail to not understand this, your next layoff, is entirely on your shoulders. Experience, will prove this correct. As I tell my children, you can learn through doing, or your can learn through the experience of your elders. One is significantly more painful than the other.

Lots of pain and anger in this discussion. I won't engage in it but will say I pray for everyone affected.

Let's leave on a positive note. Happy New Year. May the new year offer blessings to you and your families.

Goodness OP talking to himself in 21 posts. Santa leave a lump of coal or a new tablet? Hope your kids had a nice Xmas. You have a mighty big chip on your shoulder on this degree thing. You chose your path in life. Yes, there are people who wasted money on college as they learned nothing. Yes, there are also people who have zero ability to translate theory to practice.

The thing is that everyone has knowledge gaps. Only the truly intelligent realize that they have knowledge gaps and freely admit that they do. I find the best way to learn is to allow someone to feel good about their expertise and explain things to me. Now I very well may already know everything they are saying is right/wrong , but then again I may learn something new. Using this methodology, there is always a subset of people who then believe that I am an id--t engineer who knows nothing. They usually cop an abusive attitude. What these people do not realize is management asks engineers to recommend people for cherry projects and advancement. And they shot themselves in the foot... oops...

Or the payback stock options which resulted in nothing benifical for the company.

Should have given that money to the hourly workers to raise moral. More would have came from it.

Nice job OP.

People will learn. Do not support this company.

They will lose the money either through head count reduction, or product boycott. Let that show as their stock continued to forever fall or stalemate endlessly.

IF GM gave me a car and I needed money, I would sell it.

IF GM gave me a car, and I had money, I would smash it.

IF GM gave me a car, and money wasn't an issue, I would donate it to the crusher.

No pictures, simply an individuals result in corporate nonsense.

""@mdf what truth is that? that you're not worth as much to the company as a talented 18 year old kid who can sell cars, because he brings in more revenue than he costs?"

Funny you mention this. Here is a GM tech center example. Six youths with their shiny bachelor and master degrees, decide they need to evolutionize the company, because the system doesnt work. I was asked to participate in this opportunity. In less than an hour, I identified the solution, and the young engineer turns to me to say, we spent almost a half year to identify this problem. You fixed it in less than an hour.

Not only did they waste 6 months of the companys' time, they were not able to find a solution to the situation.

Sad."

Thats your new GM. Barely adequate enough.

":If OP was actually smart they would have avoided putting personally identifiable information in his post. If they weren't getting laid off before they just gave GM HR a gigantic target. Cheers mate."

There is no personal recognition. None, zero, not at all.

Additionally, I know a half dozen to a dozen of individuals by name, responsible for the complete waste of the company resources spanning a half of year. I am calling your bluff. Pull and post my name publicly, as if you are wrong, I would subpoena for liable and slander if you got my name incorrect in only the slightest. Truth, fears nothing, I can promise you this. I would use the full weight of the law to prove this as true, and inflict the full weight of law in full damages, as allowed.

Don't act like a tough azz unless you are willing to stand up to what is required to walk the line.

Like you said, Let them work until their 65. It's on them if they want to be cogs in the machine. Nothing special.

Gerry, you sound like a sincere individual, much unlike those within this very topic. Frankly, I don't know whom to trust, and whom not to - as this thread has given me many whom I simply do not want to deal with. Your post sounded sincere enough that I will reach out to you, to show you how to get out of your job. It may take 12-24 months, but you should be able to be done working completely, I would suspect, or offset many of your expenses. I will teach you how to create an adequate niche website, promote it via keywords, fill it with affiliate links, and also promote with articles. In time, your counterparts working their 9/5 jobs, until the age of 65, will never know how you did it. This is because you were intellectual aware, knowledgeable enough to asked those that do know. Plant the seeds now, and in years, you simply don't have to work further.

Let me know what you want to start your course. Lol, for everyone else and their fine bachelor and master degrees, your welcome to contact me as well, or enjoy working until your 65. You always have a choice. I won't think any less of you, if you thought that a higher education, was actually the answer.

Enjoy.

"And there you have it. Someone that identifies that affiliate marketing, website creation, article submission, and SEO, could alternatively provided for you in more ways, as an alternative income to a GM salary. Perhaps the OP started doing this in 2008. Perhaps, just perhaps, it isn't about financial, it's about right and wrong and how many people it f**ked as of recent.

If the OP did this in 2008, where money is no issue, what might their advice be to the market? "Good luck and enjoy working until your 65", no doubt. Perhaps the OP is a little more intellectually capable than most take them to be. Oops."

Your earning more per year with affiliates than a GM salary? Please help me and let me know what your doing so I can quit. Gerryhaven477@gmail.com. Please, I would live to learn how to get out of my job.

Here's a tidbit.

Half of you quote 50% of my material to replicate for new topics. Half of you upvote or endorse my comments based upon the last 50-100 topics. Many of you, dislike what I have to say within this specific topic, yet a large portion of you, find it right on the mark.

Perhaps my words have more influence than you would have ever had hoped. When the time comes, I'll outline, how many repeat topics that were pulled, and placed as stand alone topics of their own. Have you participated within those topics? Are you a hypocrite? Dislike one topic, only to engage within another?

You WILL NEVER know, as the posts are anon. Hate me one post, love me the next. You don't know what you like, and I laugh accordingly.

"Indeed. A degree doesn't define intellectual capability nor intelligence. It simply means you paid enough to regurgitate the information for a passing grade. Many of the most wealthy of the world, true entrepreneurs, did not graduate college. It's simply a gateway, a barrier to allow you to start your lifes' travel.

Nice job OP. Not everyone is going to get this."

They do say, you might feel comradery with those your peers, but yes, 95% of those in this world are not special, and they don't do anything special. I didn't say this, I'm only regurgitating this part. See how that works? So, when 9 out of 10 stand against your views, it quite honestly, means absolutely nothing.

I agree, forget about GM. They're slimeballs anyways. If you buy their overpriced products, your nuts. Go find work at a smaller shop.

One of the GM executives told us that their Denali line, they put $1500 in items, and mark it up 10x. Kind of makes you feel like a chump, given it's their most profitable lineup. Maybe he shouldn't have disclosed that info for consumer consumption.

dude chill. I started on the line. I got tired of the layoffs. Got my associates from comm college, then a bachelors , took a 40% pay cut to work in IT for GM figured less stress and no layoffs. The no layoffs was correct for 20 years. The less stress nope. You only get paid for 40 hrs a week but are required to work much more. The same supervisory behaviors that pxssed me off in the plant existed in cubeville. Now 20 years on my takehome is a smidgen above my plant takehome; my hourly rate much less; now the layoffs are in IT.

GM issues lie with management. Management kicks up dust and gets company factions warring each other to hide their own misdeeds. Give you one example. I wrote a program to analyze why part shipment costs for a plant has increased so much. The program revealed that one plant manager was shipping parts 19000 miles when the physical map showed 600 miles between source and destination. Of course he blamed IT, badmouthed IT up the chain when it was his own errors. We put in program code to audit his activities and we overrode everything stupid he did. We often suspected he was illiterate. He will continue to rise and thrive at GM, and I will be axed. Oh well about time to retire to a sunny locale.

Take it from someone who has been down this path before.

The more you ruminate the worse you will feel.

The more you repeat a message the less people listen, and the more frustrated you become.

I now drive the best vehicles for my family -Toyota van and sedan - each have 200k miles and zero issues. Rather than speak negatively about GM, I tell everyone who asks how awesome my Toyota experience has been.

In the end the snakeoil salesmen always implode and are replaced.

Ergo the continual changes in Company leadership.

If at all possible find a way to earn a living that is not dependent on the whims of a large corporation. The best revenge is living your own life well.

History shows the “elite” have always been highly skilled at manipulating the masses. Eventually they become too greedy and there is a reckoning and readjustment of the distribution of resources.
